Explains one guy's concept of low key, anyway; and a concept he derived by analyzing histograms of pbase photos considered by that community to be more-or-less low key. It's a very technical way of approaching the issue, albeit a useful one.

		| | I reworked my image and like it better. And the histogram, is WAY to the left. I couldn't decide between a BW slightly tinted with a duotone, or color. I just think shadowy tones look better in black and white, so guess which one I went with? |

		| | I tried to pass this off as low key last time- and was properly crusified in scoring on it- not even in the Top 200. Think I will do a little better this time! Black and white seems to have been a popular medium for this category in the past.

Really love the way you've brought the brightness of the sky out, very nice clear see and even in the shadows one gets a feeling of a bright sunny day ;-) seriously though as a photo I quite like this.

The lower left seems low key, but the upper right seems to shine a bit too much to be considered low key.

		| | Yeah, I only grasped the "more black" part of low key and still had too much midtones. While I don't think the color is right on this one, my July Free Study entry is much more in the Low key category. Thank you for the comment ineedauniquename. I think the blackness goes a bit too far for it being basically a sunset shot. My Konica Minolta A200 was a great camera for beach sunset shots. For a smaller camera it did not have much of a lens flare issue.

I think this is a more appropriate shot. The blackness isn't a necessity, but it will be a common side-effect for many people creating low key shots.

		| | Well I'm in. I like my shot fairly well, I think it fits the criteria, dark with a little light and very few midtones. We shall see.

		| | I'm another who likes their shot, it is uncropped, and the histo is entirely to the left of center with -2.7 EV. And dang it all, submitted in color, like melonmusketeer, I like the challenge.
My only DQ was for one of the Low Key challenges, the image finished 4th, for an illegal level (adjustment layer not in normal mode, a black color fill.) So I took no chances in basic this time! Good luck everyone.

Yet still... she enters it and holds her breath.

		| | your SX 100 lets you set minus-exposure compensation, both regular and on flash. There's still time! And who needs a studio? Just knock that EV back.
(I also have an SX 110, bought it for this feature!)

Yep...not saying it's necessary to have this things to enter this challenge...just pointing that it would be easier if i had those things in hand. The batteries of my point and shoot are dead and i didn't even had a black blanket to make a nice background (my idead needed that). :P

 PS: Good luck!

(been here going on 7 years I think)...and a good camera...actually stays a good camera...just gotta use it properly.. :)..

		| | This discussion is making me uber excited. Maybe for once, I won't get in trouble for "too dark." LOL
Good luck everybody! It's going to be fun to see how people interpret low key and execute it well using minimal editing techniques.

I'm in, and I learnt quite a few things along the way, I guess we'll see if they were some of the right things when voting begins....lol! ....and I like my image too, which probably means it won't do too well.... Good Luck everyone! I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. |
