It looks like this may stay in my top 10 all time. Very surprising but very cool...

Oh sure, 4 more votes and I've dropped now. BTW what the heck does "bokeh" stand for anyway?

Thanks for the comments Jaded_Housewife and Lutchenko.

Yeah, I suppose "bokeh" is shorter to type than "shallow depth of field". LOL

soooo close. I'm done for tonight though. getting a bit tired and punchy. don't think I can continue to give each photo the appropriate level of thought and focus. If I haven't gotten to yours yet. I'll get it tommorrow. :)

One vote overnight and they expressed their opinion with a 1. Still holding with a decent average in spite of that.

I. am. Finito.

Didn't comment on mine or my daughters shots but I did on everyone elses.
I realized near the end that I ended alot of comments with "well done"......and all though many of those shots were good, I think that perhaps I was subconsciously ordering steak. Please Send steak to:

P.O. box 4756
Madison, ms. 39110 (<----not real....please don't send sanything..lol.) :D

oooo.k., I'm so weird.. I realize that. I don't know why stuff like that even pops into my head, or why I allow it to see the light of day. I apologize. ;P

NOW you've started something. I have a habit of leaving silly comments anyway, so now people are really going to wonder about all the comments that say "medium rare".

Hey! This could be a new voting scale!

-Still mooing (brown ribbon stuff)
-Raw
-rare
-medium rare
-medium
-well done

Would medium and well done be for popular photos that cater for the masses, with medium rare reserved for those photos thta cater for a more refined palette?

LMAO..Oh no! Look what i've started.

Most of the comments are seeing the same thing in my entry that I did. All positive comments with only a minor personal preference type critique from Jaded_Housewife. A really nice one from Glad2badad just came in as well.

Thank you for the wonderful comment, it's probably the most in-depth one I've ever gotten. I hope you weren't "subconsciously ordering steak" by telling me you like the image, though steak could be arranged in exchange for a few points ;).

(Just kidding, I wouldn't engage in buddy voting. But I do hope you genuinely liked it.)

It's not "shallow depth of field," per se. It's how the out-of-focus stuff looks when you have shallow depth of field. It's a combination of your lens quality and your aperture. And it's complicated - not every lens will have the best bokeh wide open, and not every "good bokeh" lens will have good bokeh throughout the whole range of apertures.

I requested a self DQ on Wednesday and have not heard from SC, I started out at 4.1 and am now at 4.5 odd but this score really stinks, I wish they would just pull it, it is a shot that doesnt deserve a sub 5 vote, geez makes me wonder why I renewed my subscription in July. This is the first time I have done this and I have entered over 100 challenges, been a member for over 4 years, sat through the humiliation of a last place on one challenge and ever increasing below average scores so this was just the last straw.

If SC are readng this, how long does it take to pull an entry? Or is there another way in which I need to request it?

Not bad, a PB for me so far. I'm thinking it's a "love it or hate it"-type image, because I keep seeing 4s and 8s. Hoping to reach at least a 5.9 by the end of the challenge, it seems to be an upward trend right now.

I'm doing the same...with all of the 5s, 6s and the one 7...I'm up to 4.20! I inquired about a self DQ, just haven't pulled the trigger. Wonder if they leave it in, then it shows at the end after voting??? Not sure. And how would this affect our stats? Edited for missing letters...

You should be a little careful about self dqs, because if you get another dq anytime within 25 challenges, you're suspended for a week. I believe this just happened to ladyk... (it was someone... I think it was her...?)

Typically, SC will send you an email (often times it ends up going to your junk folder) about the self DQ. They will not remove the photo until you respond to that email stating that you still wish to self DQ.

I would go look again for the message and if you cannot find it submit another ticket.

To submit a Self DQ request, go to Help-->Contact Us-->DPChallenge General Inquiry
Ask to have your photo in the appropriate challenge removed by self DQ.

Oh do I know how you feel! My first year with DPC was a lot of fun... soon upgraded to a DSLR, started reading books and magazines, learning as much as I could, and with rare exception have watched my scores and average drop. Yes it is disappointing, but is more important that YOU like the image despite the score. Still sucks to see your score tank tho.

Got my only comment and it was an excellent one. I really appreciate honest criticism with suggestions for doing better. An honest critic should never worry about hurt feelings. I learned from this and will ultimately be a better photographer for it. I only wish more people (myself included) could take the time to comment on the mid-level "mediocre" shots like mine.

That brings up an interesting coincidence. When I was without my SLR for 3 weeks and using my powershot S5 instead, I turned in two 6+ entries. (A third is still in voting) Once I got another SLR, I have done a handfulof low and mid 5's with it. Just coincidence of course, but still makes me stop and wonder.

Thanks for the in depth. But....Twas a wee bit o' joking with the comment. But, I do enjoy a good bokeh by a warm fire with a good cup of coffee.
