So...I pre-ordered my Canon 7D. I have no Canon glass. I bought this mostly for the HD features (I love cinematography and this is one hell of a good camera for it...just like the 5Dmarkii)
I bought it from the store I normally get my stuff and I get a discount and points (Credit) to new stuff I buy. I decided I wanted the Canon 17-55mm 2.8f, Sigma 30mm 1.4f and Tokina 11-16mm 2.8f. I gave myself 3 weeks to do the research in what I would need in order to cover myself for short-stories, documentary style work. I made the decision a few days ago (Today is when I got my camera) and thought 'I'll go in, say I want 3 lenses and ask them to give me a deal.'. WELL, they gave me a great deal. With the points (Credit) from the camera, the Canon lens and Sigma lens, I was able to get the Tokina for nothing and still have credit left to get myself a nice tripod to replace my cheap 30USD tripod.
Well, then it came time to see if any of the lenses were in. I knew the Tokina was not, it had to be ordered. The other 2 lenses...NOT IN STOCK. Apparently people have been buying up the lenses in preparation for the 7D or something because they didn't have any of the lenses I wanted. They said it would take anywhere from a week to a MONTH. They said Sigma might be faster because apparently Canon produces 1 particular lens per day/week and then switch based on demand. Not sure how true this is, but that being said I had a nice Canon 7D body WITH NO LENS!!!!! I was in photographers HELL. I'd been waiting FOREVER for the 7D to come and now I had to wait longer.
Well, I went to work and on my way home I stopped at a much larger store that most definitely had lenses in stock. I wouldn't get the same great deal there and I already pre-paid for my other stuff so I decided to get what any decent cameraman IMO should have in his arsenal...50mm 1.8f. SO...that's what I am going to be doing video with for at least the next week. Should be fun.
A little off-topic: I always wondered why the Canon 50mm was cheaper than the Nikkor 50mm. Now I know. The Nikkor 50mm feels a whole lot more solid whereas the Canon feels like a plastic toy. For 100USD I'm not going to complain though. That's fine for now. |

heh heh, reminds me of a guy at work who recently bought an $1100 bicycle.... with NO PEDALS... he waited for almost two weeks for them to arrive so he could ride.
The Canon 50/1.8 is a cheaply made lens, but optically very good for the $. I've always heard that the faster versions of the 50 are much better build quality, and the 1.4 has been on my list for ages.
Congrats on the new camera... |

I would LOVE to see some of your videos with this camera and different lenses! I don't do quality videos, but enjoy making the odd video now & then. Maybe I'll upgrade to a 7D some day. The option of leveraging my lenses into a camcorder gets me rigid. Right now I have a little POS camcorder.
P.S. Sorry you have to wait, I would explode!

I would be a little stressed in that situation too. Think of the situation as an opportunity to hone your skills by shooting with only one prime lens for a while. You may be surprised by what you can produce.

Oh..... but now you have the anticipation...I love that part of it. the kid in a candy store, can't wait feeling you have while waiting for a new lens to arrive.
I do agree with you on the canon 50mm..Doesn't feel real. But it's better than nothing.
Have Fun!

It's also a better lens.
Okay, so I'm a Nikon guy. But I've read that it is actually a better lens, maybe on slrgear.com? I think they're the ones that have the 50mm roundup. |
