what does this mean?

Where are you seeing this? Is it an error message on the web site?
Duh. I looked at what forum you posted it in and it makes sense. I'm sure it means the item does not have the original packaging.

Usually if something is sold out of box, it means that someone bought it and returned it, or that the box was damaged. A lot of times its referred to as "open box" and sometimes you don't get everything with it. Like i've bought open box that was missing manuals and such. Can be a great deal though. I bought my Sirius radio unit open box for $30 less than the regular price.

Ah, "open box" makes more sense to me. What AJ said is correct. I've bought such items at Fry's, with a sticker indicating they have been returned and put back on the shelf with a discount. More often than not, I end up returning the item to Fry's as well. I attribute this to Fry's not paying attention and placing defective returns back on the shelf. Not worth it for a 10-15% discount and I no longer buy open box items at that store.

That is a risk you often run with it, a lot of times it was returned for a reason outside of "oh I didn't like it"

not really an answer to your question, but these two things are kind of synonymous.
