just because english is not my first language, i am little confused. Is 'petting backward' means petting on arse or on mouth. I mean if it is on arse side than he got to be careful with that middle finger , it gets stuck there sometimes. Also wearing some protection would help ....
:-D |
You're killing me! I have to wait three months before I can make the connection between the type of guy Frisca likes, and petting the kitty backward.

It means petting against the lay, or grain, of the fur. This can REALLY piss off some cats. Other cats, however, love it. |
Na, it was just a joke.
(not admitting that i tried :-D ) |

oh boys!! I popped into this thread to see what y'all got up to, and my my my! I only meant, as K10DGuy's definition stated, that Slippy likes to stir up trouble. As for my taste in men, well, the stirring up trouble part and your province of residence are the only things you have in common (that I can tell) with my husband. However, I would be happy to judge a DPC Men's Pagent to check out the hotties we might have among our midst. Talent portion required. Swimsuit portion, optional. ;) AND you have to answer some awkwardly worded question about world peace and the middle east and the plight of human rights in North America.
zxaar -- you're just wrong with that pussy stuff. Does your mother know you make such lewd insinuations about people who are strangers to you?

I personally believe the U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...

so, you expect people to accept when you're joking, but then can't in any way recognize when they return the jibes? |

As a person who try to find something to laugh about and joked with almost every-one who had displeasure of meeting me, i can say that one of the most important aspect of joking is not to offend someone. If other person did not laugh, it was complete failure. People have different boundaries and tolerance levels for different things. I stayed in hostel while graduating with few thousand other students. We lived together and we used worst type language jokes etc etc, so nothing really offends me. But it does not apply to everyone.
The purpose of joke is to put smile on someone's face and not to embarrass or to show someone down. I feel i offended someone the least thing i could do is to apologize.

Ok being British and all that - how offensive is 'flippin the bird' , after all we use two fingers over here, does the one finger have the same meaning then?

Two fingers?? I never knew that. I'm guessing North America's version started from the British version but we found a more efficient way of doing it. :P |

this made me laugh so loud the dog came to see what was so funny! Flipping the bird is as serious as hand gestures get in North America. |

ok I had to google it !
Wikipeada says
quote
Origin
The origin of this gesture is speculative, and quite possibly thousands of years old. A popular origin is that during the Hundred Years' War, the French would cut off the first two fingers of captured English archers so they would be unable to use their bows, and that after the Battle of Agincourt, the victorious English showed the French that their middle fingers were still intact.[1] This legend is also said of the V sign.
It is identified as the digitus impudicus ("impudent finger") in Ancient Roman writings[2] and reference is made to using the finger in the ancient Greek comedy to insult another person. The widespread usage of the finger in many cultures is likely due to the geographical influence of the Roman Empire and Greco-Roman civilization.
Another possible origin of this gesture can be found in the first-century Mediterranean world, where extending the digitus impudicus was one of many methods used to divert the ever present threat of the evil eye
unquote
Obviously I knew about the two finger salute and its origins but the one extended digit impudicus has never seemed offensive (to me anyway)
I can now see that in this thread the OP was trying to divert the ever present threat of the 'evil eye'.....now that's another story.....

Probably as result of the present cut backs due to the 'credit crunch' !

..It gets worse ! Now we have to watch our elbows and the whole hand !
Although "the finger" has been called "the universal sign of disrespect", it is not universal. Many other gestures are used in various parts of the world to express the same sentiment.
In the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, the V sign (given with back of the hand towards the recipient) serves a similar purpose, although "the finger" is often used.
In Italy, Poland, and countries under the influence of Russian culture (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine), the bent elbow insult is equivalent to The Finger.
In some African and Caribbean countries, a similarly obscene gesture is extending all five digits with the palm facing forward, meaning "you have five fathers" (thus calling someone a bastard).
In Greece, the five fingers are spread wide and the palm is pushed towards someone in a gesture known as the Moutza.
In India and Pakistan, social circles use the middle finger gesture in the same sense that it is used in western cultures. The same is true for most South Asian countries.
