I personally felt that it should have scored somewhere in the 5.5 range and am quite disappointed that it came so far back in the field as it did. Maybe some balanced explanations as to what this image's biggest drawbacks are would help me know what to look out for in future challenges. Any suggestions appreciated.

I did not vote in this challenge so this is the first time I've seen your photograph. My initial impression is that the composition is too busy. There were too many objects competing for my eyes' attention. First, my eyes went to the clouds which comprise the majority of the scene. My eyes then fell to the water and ripples just before they focused on the boat. While viewing the boat, the three areas of trees were competing with the sloping grass area along the sea wall for my attention. The was because of the contrasting green color which stands out in the image.
Suggestions? Well, keep the composition simple. Set up the scene with simplicity in mind; zoom in on the scene; crop in post-processing, etc. If the composition cannot be made simple, it should be very unique and/or captivating. Look at the Top 10 results in the Free Study this month. Most are simple or unique.
As a last resort, capture your images in Iceland! That should do it!! LOL! (three of the top ten images where taken in Iceland)

We need to suggest a challenge topic of "Landscapes, no Iceland". |

You may feel that there is no focal point but the viewer is drawn to the pattern in the two leaves on the left. I think this image would benefit a lot from a square crop which only includes the two leaves on the left. This would eliminate the dark patch in the bottom right which is a bit of a distraction. |
Well thank you--the reason why I didn't do that crop is I fell in love w/the leaf on the R. Funny, no? |
