Hey Nikon people,
More of a hypothetical question than anything else. I have a D40 going on 2 yrs old now. Feel I am pushing it to get the shots I want. Thinking of an upgrade, have been warned away from D70, thinking of the D90, or if I had the hypothetical amount of $$, a D200.
Thoughts? Input? Keep it positive please! |

I would warn you away from the D-70 also. Not because it is a bad camera. But because it is quite old technology compared to the newer models you have mentioned. The main thing I do not like about the D-70 is the screen size, It is quite small. The D-90 is a nice camera but I think you would have less limitation with the D-200. You can probably grab a good used D-200 for a decent price because they have been around for a few years and Nikon has released alot of Bodies since then. Have a look around. You could also look around for a used D-300 You might just get lucky and find a good price but certainly would have better luck finding a good used D-200. |

I would definitely choose the D90 over the D70 -- D200/300 would of course be even nicer, but also more expensive. |

I upgraded from a D50 to the D90 and I am very pleased, if I had the money naturally I would have gone D300 or D700 but the D90 is working out very nicely for me. |

For what it is worth here is my two cents. You have a small investment in DX glass but do have the 50mm so I don't think that should hold you to a D90/D200/D300. Looking at your type of photography you would benefit from (if $ were no object) a full frame D700. But getting real now it is more likely that with budget considerations you would be looking at a D90/D200/D300 camera.
Out of these the best bet would be the D300. I say this because it has the newer technology, is a beefy semi pro body and has the best noise performance. I addition it is likely to be dropping in price on the used market pretty fast with the new bodies coming out.
My next pick would be the D90 as it has very similar technology to the D300 and has better noise performance than the D200. It is smaller and lighter than but not quite as rugged as the D300. You even get high def movies!
I loved my D200 and think it was a tank for the nature photography I do but it is getting old in technology and did not have the noise performance of the D90/D300 camera. If you can afford to wait a touch and get a D300 used it would be worth the wait. If not and budget is small then the D200 is certainly a good camera just not as big a jump up.
Hope that helps. |

I upgraded from a d80 to a d90, and was VERY pleased, so upgrading from your D40 should be pure pleasure, whichever way you go. I chose to go d90 and start building up some FF glass first, so that when I eventually get a d700 or similar, I will only have the cash outlay for the body, instead of trying to lay out for the body and lenses all at once.
I can recommend the d90, but cannot contrast and compare it to the d300. |

Do not rule out a Fujifilm S5 Pro. This is a fantastic camera that you can find for great prices and IMO is way better than a D200, I have owned both bodies and prefered the S5 Pro by miles |

LOL you guys and gals are funny and great! Thanks for the input and advice, feel free to add more. Oh and if any of you want to send me some $$$ to help me realize my dream, please feel free to do so :-)
I should add too that I want to submit pix to Alamy and believe they have a 6 million pixel size requirement. What would meet that, a medium-format camera? Or my humble D40?
BTW dunno if I'll ever go to the *dark side*...though then I could borrow Magnumphotography's lenses and filters! Why is it that redheads, with the only exception I can think of being IreneM, seem to lean towards Canon? |

Because Redheads and Canon are both kind of Tempermental. |

Becasue they are blonds in disguise?
Only kidding of course. As for Almay you will have no problem with any of the camera mentioned. |

The D40 is a 6 MP camera and I would think you can produce a file that Almay would accept. Although it is on the low end of what would do the job. |

As I thought. But still, think I could pull it off with the D40 for now. But yeah part of getting a D90 or more would be so I could submit to macro agencies like Alamy.
Thanks! |
