For our Mountain State Fair this year, we have to have our pictures mounted on foamboard instead of framed.
I've never done this before.
How do you get the pictures to stick teh best? rubber cement? scotch tape? duct tape??
Is it better (as in how it looks) to buy a big piece and cut it into smaller pieces, ro just find smaller pieces at a craft store somewhere?
The pictures have to be 8x10 on an 11x14 board, except for one which is two 5x7s on an 11 x 14.
Any ideas, suggestions, comments?

when my daughter graduated from HS, I was in charge of making a wall of honor for the graduates...I used "spray adhesive" (got it at Jo-Ann Fabrics any craft store should carry it...look in the book scrapping section...) it worked pretty well and didn't mess with the pictures...has enough "tack" to make it stick... |

Karma, I mount display prints on foam board about twice a week. I have HUNDREDS mounted now. its how I display my fav shots to my clients during their preview sessions.
What you need is Photo Mount by 3M. You can get it at craft stores (Michael's). DON'T use the regular spray adheisive "Spray Mount" because its not rated for photos and can bubble over time. You will spray the back of the photo AND the foam board pretty liberally with Photo Mount. Wait for it to dry to the touch (about 6-10 minutes), then put the 2 parts together. I trim all of the images I want to mount on a board first, then spray the whole board and back of all images at the same time(on a huge drop cloth), then mount them all - finally with a utility knife and straight edge I cut them apart. If you cut last, you get perfect edges.
With smaller prints mounted, you can use a small easel or plate holder type thing to stand them up and change them often. For larger ones, I like putting a bit of hook & loop on the back and just stick them to the wall.
Hope that helps.

I have used this for a few years with excellent results. I also used the same product only slightly thicker but didn't immediately find the link.

With that, I assume I stick the picture to the sticky side. Is it then sticky around the edge of the picture and will pick up dust (where the exhibit is is very very very dusty) etc? |

I think that stuff is meant to be trimmed to the picture's edge -- it won't work they way you described they want the photos mounted (essentially making a mat effect) for this particular situation, for the reasons you mention.
PS: Though maybe you could sprinkle on some "attractive-looking" dust ahead of time, making a nice textured frame. Might violate their rules though ...

Meaning (unless you have a 4x5 view camera and digital back) that every photo must be cropped from the original composition. |

Our local fair requires mounting on matboard, so I use a cheap scrapbooking gluestick. They stick perfectly well for the weekend, but afterwards I can easily remove them and reuse the board year after year. (Yeah, I'm cheap!)
Arghhh... just realised that I'll be on holidays at fair-time this year, so no entries... :(

Our local fair is coming up on Wednesday. Once again...I've procrastinated so long that it's now too late to enter. *shrug* Good luck. |

That was basically my thought when I read this thread. Our fair was last week, and again, I missed it due to laziness. Thanks for rubbing it in karmat!

I used a glue stick once for this purpose with bad results. The photos began to come loose before the end of the judging, and the judges wouldn't even consider mine because of the poor mounting. |

It's funny, the first time I used an expensive 3M one that was supposedly specifically for photos and they started coming loose before we ever left home, so I tried a 2/$1 one and it was perfect. I've used those ever since. |

I'd just order it mounted to foamboard. WHCC's is 1/4 inch but Mpix has 3/16 inch. Save yourself the trouble of getting photo on straight, no wrinkles or bubbles, no raggedy board edges, etc. etc. :) |
