This was my origianl entry in NG:
This was another one of the last minute uploads for me as I tend to wait till the last minute to do all of my processing.
You can see the left side of the neck is burned out somewhat. I had a hard time cropping this image because of the young bucks long neck :)
I wanted those fantastic eyes, big ears and very young antler growth to show as a prominent part of the crop. I wanted "CUTE" + "Ahhhhh"
I was doing some additional editing on this image yesterday and came up with this version:
The border on this image is only legal under DPC Advanced Editing as I understand it.
Any comments?
Or should I have gone with one of my other photographs?
These are all rough with little or no PS processing.

I much prefer the second crop of the deer (and almost made the comment in the challenge that a shorter crop might have worked also).
That said, I would have scored the last photo of antlered creatures (gazelles, some kind of sheep or goat?) highest of them all. The composition is very stunning. The Zebras are very nice, too - even with the odd light spot on the baby - the grouping is good - with a little post processing you could make fine images of them all.
Good job.

The first photograph of the "Others" was a crop from this original.
Should I have left the original as is?
original Cropped
The one thing I did not like of the original was the pile of hay on the ground? I thought it was just a tad un-natural.
I thought the cropped image had a stonger impact?
Catherine:
Not sure what you meant about the odd light spot on the baby?
These were shot close to sunset. And the brown in the babies fur coat stood out more with the sun. You can just see the same brown coloration in the tips of the adults Zebra's manes.

I like the original image - possibly because I like the composition balance better and the notion that these two are a maybe a mated pair. I mean, I would have looked longer and thought about that - were they a pair, which one was female, or were they two males?
As to the Zebra, yes, I see upon closer inspection that it is the sun and the shade is similar to the older animals' mane crests - but at a glance it seemed to be a flare of some kind.
Cheers,

The second crop of your original is more appealing to me as well as the shot of the two (Gazelles?) as opposed to the crop down to just the one. I agree with Catherine that the composition of that shot is more interesting and tends to draw me in more than just the lone animal. It also seems a little clearer to me.
That said, they are all great shots. :) |
