Between a ton of work, and a camera in its death throes (and who am I kidding, a bit uninspired photographically), I'm back from an unintentional photographic Sabbatical. What prompted the resurfacing? Why, my brand new birthday present: a gorgeous Nikon D90!! I ran out and bought two lenses, the Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3,5-6,3 Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] macro for Nikon, and the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D. As a hobbyist, I wanted an "all-inclusive" lens, because I just cannot fathom switching lenses anywhere (or carrying all the equipment). Buy I also wanted a macro for my obsession with getting really, really close. I took the zoom out on a test run today and took mostly shots at either extreme to test whether there was any vignetting or fisheye-ing in the wide setting, or any flattening or compressing on the tight end. I've posted two of these sets to get your thoughts, taken from about 7-10 feet. I only ran auto-levels on both.

wide angle

zoomed all the way in.

I'll post some test macros soon.

I haven't spent any time with it yet mBastin, but will report back as soon as I do. The quickie test shots I did take were VERY impressive. But then again, it's my first true macro, so maybe I'm easily impressed :-)

The Nikon 60mm Micro is an excellent lens. Check out irenem who has taken a bunch of excellent photos with this lens.

Since you mentioned irenem i wanted to ask...
I really don't have much money to buy a DSLR camera, but i'm trying to decide which one will be fine for me, so i can keep some money and buy one. I saw Irene's profile and i wish someone could explain to me what's the BIG difference between this three cameras:

Nikon D70
Nikon D50
Nikon D700

The difference between them is too much? What about the Nikon D90 and D80?
I know it's a newbie question but i'm really not familiar with the DSLR, but i took some shots with a Nikon D80 few days ago and i'm in love now.

D50 - IreneM can win

D70 - IreneM can really kick your butt

D700 - IreneM can kick your butt so bad your nose will bleed.

Agreed..., I went from the D50 to the D90 and I am extremely happy, the D50 is a nice camera but I can really tell the difference in the fine detail going to the D90. If I would have had the money the D300 or 700 would have been my choice, if price is an issue the D90 is another good option.

has anyone used the af-s micro Nikkor 60mm F/2.8G ED? From what i've heard its basically the AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm with upgrades. i'm planning on getting it but im not sure if it's worth the extra $200+. what do you think?

Not true, the focus speed is more a function of the lens than the camera, especially if it has internal focussing motors.
I have a 1994 Sigma 75-300mm APO Sigma 4.5-5.6 on my D90, it's focused and shot magnificent in flight bird shots.

Tawny Eagle (150 kms/hour) and perfect focus (the small Flickr jpg doesn't do the original justice)
Birdlife set all taken with an old style screw type focusing lens mentioned above.
