The use of the poster of the oil rig was presumably because the photographer did not have access to a real oil rig thing. Whether the letter of the rules was broken or not can be debated but the spirit of the rules and this competition site certainly was.
The spirit of the artwork rule was not broken by the winning entry, the artwork was integral to the meaning of the photograph in a way that is more real than say if I had stood in front of a poster of a cave for a self portrait 'cos I haven't got access to a cave (incidently I haven't entered the tunnels and caves competition).
Kudos for getting your dad to have boiling treacle poured over his hand ;-) |

... mind you I'm not sure where I stand if the image of the oil rig was the photographers own photo printed .... |
