I have two young daughters as well and we have both the Xbox360 and Wii. I do not allow any internet access for these devices so I cannot comment on the subscription aspect.
To tell you the truth, my daughters play the Xbox 360 far more than the Wii. The Xbox is far more versatile as follows:
Xbox 360 Pros / Cons:
Pros:
1. The Lego games are excellent and my daughters LOVE them. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman are favorites. Spiderman is good as well (although not Lego). The graphics are excellent. (I confess to playing a game or two myself...shhhhh!)
2. Dance Dance Revolution is perfect for my daughters and they love it.
3. Also, a DVD Player for movies when they get tired of the games.
Cons:
1. Keep lots of extra batteries on hand for the remote controls. Nothing is worse than listening to the tearful drama of "out of batteries."
Otherwise, I highly recommend Xbox 360.
Wii Pros / Cons:
Pros:
1. Highly interactive games with the Sports version and very family oriented.
2. Easy to customize and encourages physical activity and interplay with family members.
Cons:
1. The Wii-motes have to be added onto with additional parts depending which games you buy which means more $$$ for the remote controls. Xbox does a much better job with the remotes (IMHO) including adding multiple devices.
2. Can't play anything but Wii related media (e.g. not a DVD or other media player)
Recommendation:
Overall, either system would be a good start, but once you are on the train...you will probably end up buying more than one system in the long run. Xbox is a very versatile family gaming system, and Wii is a terrific expansion as a second system.
Good Luck!
Edit: Grammar and Spelling! (I'm hopeless!)

Wow i go to bed and get up and get all these excellent comments :) :)
just a few thoughts
I am in NZ so I am stunned to hear that people have 2 or 3 game consoles, here I have never heard of people having more than one and infact even having one is definitely not the norm
Maybe its because of the price I don't know what they cost in the US but here to get the console a couple of extra controllers and a couple of games will set us back $1000 NZD thats $656 USD, Im interested how does that compare?
For us that is alot of money and is likely to be our only console purchase. I notice also at most places that you cant get finance to buy a game console
Also I guess I have to be aware that my 12 almost 13 yr old will probably need something a bit more interesting for her age group but still not a shoot em and kill em, something with intelligence......also maybe my husband and I might play too..............if my husband had his way they would all be shoot em and kill em!

I would argue the opposite, game developers are often forced to "Dumb down" games for the Xbox because the DVDs cant hold as much data as bluray discs. Add to that lack of Bluray and the monthly pay to play online fees, looks to me as though the Xbox is going obsolete long before PS3. |
I see what youre saying, but the issue is this: xbox sales are much much greater than ps3 sales, which means that developers aren't building for PS3, they are building for xbox, and porting to PS3. The only one that is getting dumbed down are the wii version, which is why I am not a fan of games that aren't designed specifically for the wii. The xbox pay to play model has now been going on for years with no sign of letting up.
Not to mention ACTIVISION recently threatened to stop supporting PS3/PSP altogether. 1 company doesn't sound like a lot, since there are a ton of game shops, but remember, one company not supporting the dreamcast was caused it to ultimately collapse.
From Activisions CEO: "I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. I will be going into the city today to do a little window shopping mostly for camera gear. However I will take note of prices on Wii systems and report back with who has best deals. |

Another game to look into regardless of system is Rock Band 2. Teens love it, so do adults. Its a lot of fun, but a pretty expensive game, because you have to get the kit w/ the guitar, drums, and mic. But really, try it sometime if you see it set up at the store, its a blast. |

I was going to do some price hunting today but because of the weather I didn't walk around as planned and never got close to any of the stores I had planned on checking out. Might go out tomorrow afternoon and have a look around. |

Maybe. Maybe not. It does say a lot about who's buying what and lack of popularity leads to obsolescence. Betamax was "superior" to VHS, just like HD DVD had advantages over Blu-Ray.
I will say that my Xbox has needed service twice. Once when the optical drive failed and recently for some kind of hardware fault. In both cases, I had a replaced or repaired unit in my hand in just over a week after sending it in. They also gave me a free month of Xbox live.
As far as games for the kids, my boys, ages 6 and 8 play the Xbox more than I do and they LOVE the Lego games as well as Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. There are also TONS of games available on Xbox Live that they like. Personally, I prefer to play the kinds of games that parents really shouldn't let their children play. What can I say? I like watching zombies explode.
With the price of Blu Ray players dropping fast, that's not much of an argument for the PS3 anymore. |

Judging by the clouds we could see over your way, I can see where you would think the weather was only a tad better. But here in the City it was a pretty nice day, Blue Skies and 1000s of people out bumming around.
I managed to check out Harvey Norman and Dick Smith both selling the Wii system for $499
ETA: Photos from this afternoon.
Nice day in Welly.
Clouds over the Hutt.

The extra controllers are fairly cheap. The games are where they get your money. You will want to get some rechargable batteries for the controllers as well. I know it sounds painful. But it will provide you and your family with countless hours of fun. Do you have a Kidney you can sell? lol
ETA: Keep in mind you can always rent games at the video store, in some cases this is best option for 2 reasons. Some games are only fun for a few days, also a good way to try before you buy.

Then best bet, IMO, is to get a Wii and a copy of House of the Dead Overkill. I found it absolutely hilarious. In a good way, that is.

Neither system is going anywhere. They're both here to stay for this round. As soon as the PS3 Slim comes out, I'll have both. |

Think of it as Netflix for games. |
