I have also been a huge fan of Jens Voigt for years. He is always one of the most aggressive riders, and always seems to be in the break. That was a nasty crash, and hope that his recovery is speedy.

Lance looked great today when he crossed that gap...reminded me of days of old. He must have been feeling good after a rest day. Tomorrow's stage is epic with four category 1 climbs, and one category 2 climb. I hope Lance can hang in there.

As with Melethia, George Hincapie is my favorite American rider, but must say that Lance is a close second.

The latest update says he has a concussion and broke his right cheekbone (ow!!) and he told his teammates to keep up the good fight. Also said he'd stay in hospital for awhile yet. I'm assuming the face will require some surgery eventually, but for the time being, I'm sure the hospital stay is because of the concussion. Have to say it was probably a VERY good thing he had a helmet.

They used to think smoking 'opened' your lungs and you could ride better.

maybe the were right heh

I believe they also stopped in little villages along the way for beverages. Ah, cycling was so civilized then.... :-)

Gotta love the Schleck boys. :-) I suspect they've got extra motivation today, to ride well for Voigt. But they really do seem to be nice guys, in addition to rather accomplished riders.

Oh, and if you watched today, didn't it seem like Lance was having a darn good time? Working his butt off, yes, but having a good time doing it.

Is it just me, or do time trial bikes look wickedly uncomfortable to ride?

They sure look great in action, and as a technical piece, they're a pleasure to look at. I like riding sport motorcycles, and I hear that question all the time. The answer there is, "I like the position."

I don't think it's just you! Time trial bikes are designed to be aerodynamic, not to be comfortable.

It looks like Contador is in trouble with his own team today. When he attacked yesterday, I thought WTF? He improved his own position, but knocked Lance off the podium, and possibly Kloden. Astana had a chance at owning the podium, but that appears to be gone now. Lance can probably take time out of the Schleck brothers today in the time trial, and maybe get back to second or third place, but looks like Contador is unreachable now...that was probably his intent.

The rumors are that Lance and Bruneel will be leaving Astana to form their own team. That announcement is supposed to come today.

One of the things I admire most about Lance is the talent he has for unifying a team & looking out after it. So I look forward to the team he & his manager will put together.

Anyone have a link to a video that features Lance riding? I never have seen more than a few seconds of him...

I've seen conflicting reports about Contador's move yesterday. He says he talked with Klöden about it and Andreas said yeah, go for it, but in the end, the Schleck boys (my newest favs in the peleton - they rock!) stayed with him and Klöden was the one who was dropped. Bruyneel says he told Contador not to attack. So who really knows what happened, what's politics, and what's press.

Neil, tune in to Versus this evening - you can see Lance doing the time trial thing.

And yeah, pretty sure Lance has said he has a sponsor (an American sponsor at that) to form his own team, and there's no question Bruyneel will be the DS if he does. What will be interesting is who he gets for that team.

And the sponsor is (are you ready?) Radio Shack.

Watching Stage 21. Holy cow! Phil Liggett is a poet, he can even roll his r's, I get a big kick out his commentating. We don't have Versus in HD yet here ;( but the video photography was excellent. The video summaries bring tears to my eyes. Hugs & kisses to the heroes of the Tour!

I'm quite envious - I really miss Phil and Paul and Bobke. I wonder if the video summaries will be on Versus to watch. If anyone sees them there or on youtube, let me know.

Yes! let's find them on youtube! Great idea. They were presented on Versus in segments but it looked to me like a really nice montage of all the best, most memorable video shots (a sub-competition). There was one of a helicopter flying over a glacier that suddenly made me think of NatGeo. And the one of the snails on the road, like spectators. And some of the fans/spectators. Hah. The music they're using is interesting, too. I have to work today, I'll be spending my free time looking for that video.

[eta]I can't help but wonder...looking at the old photos of the Tour at the scruffy, stubbled faces of the riders...comparing them to the HD color images of the clean, sharp, sleek riders today...how much of an influence the knowledge that pictures of you are going to be all over the world in HD is having on the riders as they get ready for the day. It can't just be the spandex. The seem so aware of the cameras. There is one amazing shot of Contador on the podium where he gives the camera lens The Look, right into the lens, & winks. What bedroom eyes he has. Oh dear. Lance, too, knows the trick of using the camera lens to connect with an unseen audience. It's interesting.

But was he a unifying force on his team this year? After the race Contador said that the hardest moment in the race was not any stage but in the team's hotel room... He also said that he and Lance are "incompatible". If that's the case why were they both on the same team to begin with? I don't think either of them are comfortable being anything but team leaders.
