OK, here's the deal. It's gonna suck - really suck - and you're gonna hate every minute of it. Just be ready for that. But I'm convinced you can do it. I'm not gonna tell you "it gets easier" because in the first week, you won't believe me anyway. But I will tell you to stick it out even though it sucks. :-)
Today is day 20 for me. Kind of a sad day, but I'm not sure that has to do with quitting smoking. I think it's just a mood.
Had a bit of a challenge this weekend - was at a wedding where I really didn't know anyone and lots of folks were smoking and I often didn't have much to do. I would have welcomed the distraction/activity of wandering outside to smoke. Had a brief challenge at work today, too, but successfully fought that off. I think mostly because one of the smokers in my building came up shortly after the challenge presented itself and said "Is it true? Did you quit smoking?" And yes, it's true. I have quit smoking. :-) |

I'm at week 3 day 1 now and I'm starting to dream about smoking. Sometimes it feels like a huge hard-drug for me, but it seems to be going quite easy. Too easy. Sometimes I forget that I've quit. Weird what the brain does to you...
And by the way, I'm damn proud of myself!!!!!!!! Never thought it woud be so easy (sorry Deb, for me only the first 4 days were hard). |

Hey, I think it's great! I'm very proud of you, too - I could never do it with another smoker in the house. And I know what you mean about sometimes forgetting. I'll start heading out back and think "Oh, wait, I don't smoke anymore..." :-) I still go out back and just enjoy the fresh air now. |

You are absolutely right, and I think it's great we quit almost at the same day. That motivates me even more, and I hope it does for you too! I'm proud of you too Deb! |

Day 24, I guess it is. I turned off the little counter gadget I had running on my desktop. Figure I've made it past three weeks - now I'll pretty much start counting in months. Going well, except for the somewhat unexpected "benefits" of not smoking... Apparently, smoking is a very good suppressant of hot flashes. When you quit smoking, they come back with a vengeance. Not a problem, really. I've had them for years, they're not fatal - not even harmful. Just annoying.
I'm sleeping better, which is good. Starting to get a few more of the "gosh it might be nice to have a ciggy" times than I did before. I suspect this is normal. None has been bad enough to make me want to go buy cigarettes, though. I still like standing next to smokers on occasion... :-)
I'm still at a bit of a loss, however, when people ask "So what made you decide to quit?" I really don't know why I decided to now. Probably the fact all you people in this thread are a really, really bad influence!
So cryan, get ready to jump on the bandwagon - we'll see you here tomorrow, right?
Oh, and how are things going, kolasi and Iraklis? (Especially in the tantrum wars - who's winning?)

I'm ready for tomorrow, at least I keep telling myself that I'm ready. Honestly, I'm a little scared. What will I do with all the free time after 20 yrs of smoking? |

Hey everyone, I'm glad your all doing well and still fighting the good fight. I've just returned from saying goodby to my wifes Grandmother. She finally lost her battel with cancer at age 96 and she will be missed.
Keep up the great work everyone.
Has anyone heard from AmeedEl-Ghoul

Three months, three weeks, two days, 22 hours, 51 minutes and 49 seconds.
2299 cigarettes not smoked, saving $689.71.
Life saved: 1 week, 23 hours, 35 minutes.
And I almost never even think about smoking anymore.

Way to go Barbara!!! :D
I stopped smoking on Sun, 28 Jun 2009 13:35:00 GMT.
It has been 3 weeks, 6 days, 3 hours, 29 minutes and 54 seconds since I quit.
I have saved $ 149.84 by choosing not to smoke 624 cigarettes.
More importantly, I saved 0 weeks, 4 days 18 hours 27 minutes of my life!
I think about smoking like 4 times a day right now. Having a 6-week-holiday, so that's probably gonna be hard. We'll see how I'll manage ;) |

WOW things got awful quiet in this thread. Well nothing new to report for me, still sitting at the same weight loss. I'm stuck in a rut at the moment, no up, no down. I guess it could be worse.
I hope all is well with everyone else. Does anyone have anything to report?

I've gained a couple of pounds. I am discouraged by the general age-related decline of my person (which is mostly age related and not non-smoking related). I used to have decent legs. Now they're lumpy and blah and look like the legs of an old lady. I don't feel like an old lady in my head, but by gosh I've certainly become one outwardly.
I miss smoking. More at some times than others - after a nice long bike ride and just before bed. Watched a guy stock shelves full of cigarettes today. Watched very, very longingly. Sigh. But have passed the four week point. Yay me. |

Well I lost another 3 pounds this week. I'm happy about that. Have been walking everyday and I did get my bike down off the hook and will be getting it up and rideable this weekend. Smoke free for 6 months and think of them more now then I did when I first quit. |

Mind over matter, gals. Just gotta go with the "smoking sucks and I don't wanna play that game anymore" and CONVINCE ourselves of that! I still love the smell of smoke, but not of smokers. I still miss the having something to do, but am starting to like the freedom of not HAVING to smoke.
But I swear, the increase in the number of complete idiots I've had to deal with lately is very, very trying!!! |

So is it just me, or after the "novelty" wears off, is it harder to remember just exactly why we're doing this in the first place?? Other than not having to check to make sure you have your lighter with you all the time.... |

- Feeling healthier & fitter (yes, I do, not a clichee!)
- Being able to walk the stairs without having to catch my breath
- Not spending a lot of money on cigs, but on fun stuff (books, beauty-arrangments, etc) and still have more money left then when you were smoking
- No more smelly clothes & hair
- Not having to check if you have your cigs with you
- Now having to go to the gas-station late at night because cigs are all gone
Hmm, that's all I can think of right now. |

Those are the biggies to me. I also might add:
- My daughter and husband are thrilled with me not smoking and would be so upset if I started again
- My new job is on a No Smoking campus and it would be a major pain to have to leave to have a smoke |

Good points, both of you! I think for me it's hard to see some of the benefits, because I was kinda working on staying in shape before I quit smoking. My joints still hurt (and in fact more than before it seems!) so that is still the limiting factor in my exercise, not my breathing. And it's still hard to breathe going up steep hills! :-)
But I am spending less money, and I don't have to make sure I have cigs with me all the time.
Had to laugh - was walking through a mall today and a tobacco shop had "trial" cigarettes sitting out on a tray! How terribly rude of them! Good thing I didn't have a lighter with me, huh? |

Almost 3 weeks done (on monday it will be)
i dont feel much different except for having more energy during the day
my office was the unofficial smoking room at my work, people would stop by for a smoke during the day, now they dont want to because i 'quit'
I kind of miss this tradition and am trying to convince the smokeers to come back (also i would like the smoke smell around me hehe) |

I think the thing that surprises me the most is the profound sadness. At first I guess it was due to leaving behind a HUGE part of my life, but now it's more related to just the complete unfairness of the world in general, or something like that. It no longer seems related to smoking (or lack thereof), but to life in general. Note that this sadness is not at the moment overwhelming, or all-encompassing, but it is surprising in its strength. |
