What does that phrase mean anyway?

It comes from the boxing ring (well, we supposed that some of you might have guessed the circus ring...). In the early 19th century, when boxing was quite popular, one who wished to challenge a boxer would throw his hat into the ring. This was probably necessitated by the crowds and noise at such events; you'd be missed if you simply tried to shout out a challenge or push your way through the crowd and into the ring. John Hamilton Reynolds wrote in The Fancy: "Throw in his hat, and with a spring get gallantly within the ring." This is from 1820 and is the first recorded use of the term.
The phrase soon came to be used figuratively to mean "to enter a contest" and then "to enter a political contest". Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt used it in 1912:"My hat's in the ring", he said, meaning that he had entered the presidential race.

Ok, I didn't go out to Jamestown to get the shot I want, and my husband is out of town. My 14 year old is at the movies (and I'm not convinced I could make her look 16...)

When doing a self portrait, how do you get past the fact that it's a picture of yourself? If I liked people taking pictures of me, that's one thing. But when you're camera shy in the first place, it's torture taking pictures of yourself! argh!! Anyone want to come over here and be my model :D

Along the same line, the phrase "to throw in the towel" (meaning to give up or concede defeat) comes from wrestling (maybe boxing also), when a wrestler's "second" or ring attendant/mamager/coach would throw a rolled-up/taped towel into the ring to signify concession when his guy faced an inescapable (and possibly injurious) situation.

Haha! I should definitely throw in the towel! unfortunately, I have to enter something because of formula DPC--I should give everyone the chance to see me crash and burn instead of withdrawing before the race even starts. ah well, for what it's worth, I'm finishing one now.

I was really hoping that you'd be able to send your pit crew over to help me out. I figured the 1st 5 rounds in this were yours, and the rest were mine!

oh wait, there's only 6 rounds you say?

It is a little bigger than I'd like -- I keep forgetting that when I'm setting my DOF.
