First off, many THANKS who voted for my picture, Weighing in the Future, that placed fourth in the National Geographic challenge.

This is my third 4th place after 13 challenges that I've joined. Well, it seems like the ribbon eludes me. But I am very happy about the high score so it is an improvement and a good evidence of learning.

Anyway, here's my question to the administrators of the site. I am suppose to send the original picture of the shot on top, and I did get the email-link awhile ago. I tried to send it along with the explanation but it has some problems in uploading (it says failure to connect to server). Maybe it is the size of the original picture. Can you send me again the email-link or can you suggest other ways on how I could possibly send the original? Maybe an e-mail attachment? Thanks... Hope you respond to me ASAP so that I can send it ASAP too

You should have also got a link in your stats box on the home page that you could click on and upload the image and instructions. I assume that box is there whether you have scores showing or not.

Yes, it was in my stats box a while ago, and it was in red fonts but since i tried uploading (and failed) it disappeared. I hope the administrators can do something about this ASAP.

I have re-requested the original on your image so you can try again.

I sent my original picture this morning (Thailand time) but I am getting a message again this time that I have to send the original . Can anyone please clarify this? Is there something wrong with the first file that I sent?

Anyway, I will send the original file again tomorrow as I have difficulty uploading a file this big from my internet at home. Thanks and hoping for your response ASAP.

I wrote this email to the administrators a few minutes ago. I am posting this here too in case someone kn ows the answer. Thanks.

"Hi! I would like to ask about the file that I sent this morning as a proof for my 4th place National Geographic entry "Weighing in the Future". May I know why, in your letter, it is not the original unedited version when it is, in fact.

Anyway, if you want me to re-send it, kindly send me another request to have it sent because the alert mail/notice is not working. If you do respond to me, I wish there will be some explanation why it cannot be accepted as original, unedited version as I basically did the same procedure in my another fourth place entry in Poster Challenge in terms of downloading the file from my camera to my computer. I am not very technology-literate so please give me some explanation. I hope I won't be DQ'ed just because of this.

Can I, instead, send my original file to any of you guys, through your email, as I really have problem downloading pictures to the DPChallenge "server". I hope this will be settled soon.

Thank you very much and I am sorry for all the requests and queries.

You can send the file to me directly if you like. dpcjohn@setzler.net

In the latest upload, your file seems like it has corrupted data, but in the previous one you uploaded it said in the EXIF that the file had been edited in Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

I think the 'photoshop 7' issue in the EXIF data could be introduced when Photoshop is used to retrieve an image from the camera. Most cameras have twain compliant drivers and photoshop and a lot of other programs can acquire the image directly from the camera.

This element of the EXIF data does not 'prove' that the image has been edited or modified in any way.

Would it be an issue if this image was edited in PhotoShop 7? Confused why this being in the EXIF would matter...

Thanks for the response and emails I got. Anyway, John, I am sending to you my file after I post this.

Still I am confused about downloading from my camera to the computer. I was using the Nikon View software then. Somehow, it converts the file to JPEG. Just last Monday, I have my new computer and I will be using i-photo for future download (I haven't done it yet). Is it gonna affect the EXIF data? Well, my purpose is just to enjoy beautiful pictures and share some slices of life from my side of the world but it does seem a little bit complicated now.

Because a true "from the camera" original will not have ever been manipulated by another program, such as Photoshop. When we verify the top-placing entries in a challenge, it needs to be the exact file as it came from the camera -- not one that has been opened in Photoshop and re-saved, even if nothing was done to the image.

Anytime a camera file is opened in another application and then saved, the EXIF can be modified, making it invalid for use as "proof".

Therefore, it is always important to use the Save as... option, and save any edits/tweaks/etc. to a new file, leaving the file that came from the camera un-touched.

Duhhhh!!!! I'm so stupid! I wasn't thinking straight. Of course this would be a problem. Sorry about that! My bad! It all makes sense to me now. :-\ See why I'm never in the top few who have to give their originals. :-) Thanks for setting me straight!

We are currently investigating why we are seeing modified EXIF tags on entries submitted from Macintosh computers. We've recently seen the "Software" tag set to "QuickTime 6.5" and the "DateTime" field modified. Since I don't have a Mac, I'm not sure what part of the "process" is doing this, but I have my guesses that Apple has some "Camera Download Wizard" that does not simply download the camera from the file, but modifies the embedded EXIF.

If anybody has a Macintosh and uses Apple tools to download their images and wants to do some testing to see if we can determine what is modifying the EXIF, please send me a private message.
