For the National Geographic challenge? I think I'd have given it about a 6. |

I would say a 6 as is. The corner of the wall or pillar on the left is the main distraction for me. I otherwise like the amount of space around the subjects and the exposure you've chosen. |

Absolutely wonderful. Would have scored it very high. In the top 1%. I even like the pillar cutting off the left view - it adds a dimension that would have been lacking in a straight out shot. But I like diversions in photographs - I believe they actually make the viewer consider the primary subject more carefully - as their eye is drawn to the diversion they force it willfully back to center - it is sort of like having many first impressions. :) I look at photographs exactly like I look at paintings - I rarely care for form. I am solely interested in content - even if the content is simply formless beauty. In this case the content also tells a wonderful story. Thank you so much for showing us.

Interesting polarization we have. I believe the pillar adds tremendously to this photograph - it provides context, atmosphere and a reason to consider where these people are and what they are doing.
Aside: I think your New Year's Resolution photo is one of the best on this site and it has a great diversion - the posts in the far right.

Edited because I am rather dense and can't quite figure how to get a url here - was trying to put a link to the photo I mentioned:

Thank you for you comment about my photo.
While I believe you are right about a pillar adding context and atmosphere I don't like how the light is so hot on it. Also because of its thickness and blockiness (if that's a word) it seems to overly weigh down the left side of the photo. While a little imbalance can create interest in a photo I just find my eye overly drawn to it and away from the main subject.
Playing with the photo a bit... I really like a tight crop focused on the person directly under the white light with half of each person on either side. A crop like that I would score very high.
Another option would be to just shave off more of the left side. You can still keep the sweet spot on "face" of the person facing us if you remove about 25 pixels. |

The pov is what makes this interesting. I also like the pillar. It anchors the picture and is an important element. I don't think it would be nearly so strong without it. The space on the right with the straight lines of the moulding works as a negative reflection for the pillar, creating a nice balanced picture. There are details left in the pillar that might be enhanced by selective burning. Anyway, I like it. |

Thank you all very much for the comments. I hope to have more images that spark conversation. That, to me, is what photography is all about.

To my eyes, the pilliar is too distracting. Other than that, I really like the low angle of the photo, it almost looks like you snuck in a quick shot before anyone could noticed. It has alot of mystery to it. The shot would have received a 7 from me. |
