Anyone know the pros and cons of Compact Flash vs Memory Stick (specifically the sony stick)? |

CF can be used in many different cameras, but the MS can only be used in Sony products. This is bad when you want to upgrade to a non-sony camera, because you have to buy a load of new memory.

CF appears to be be more prone corruption and data loss than Sony's Memory Stick®. However, CF cards are more widely used too. The supporting stats may reflect this.
Personally I have used Memory Stick® for a little more than two years without a single incident. Others using CF cards appear not to have been as consistently happy.
Again, a qualifier: I am meticulous about procedure (ejecting the disk image before turning the camera off etc). Others may not be.

I have been using the same CF card with my last few cameras over the past 2.5 years and I have never had any issues using my CF card. I guess it's just like anything else, some will have issues and some wont. There are good an bad eggs in every basket I guess no matter what the product is.

Do you mean your computer? My camera requires the camera to be OFF before taking out the card. |

its possible to turn off the camera while the card is writing -edit - errr being written too......
that corrupts it

Yes, I meant the disk image on the computer's monitor. Turning the camera OFF before removing/inserting is even more critical as you rightly point out.

Does anyone know anything about differences in read/write speeds of the CF card vs Sony Stick? |

Having used both and having read a lot of material on both, the sony memory stick is much more reliable that compact flash. I have only heard rare comments about corruption and lost data from memory stick owners/users.
True, you can't use them in as many different types of devices... This hasn't been a problem for me because I don't have devices that use either other than my camera..

That's an interesting question, but not necessarily a good comparison.
Although there are 42x CF cards on the market Canon does not reccomend using anything over 14x for the 300D/Rebel, and I believe the same applies for the 10D. Unless the technology built into the camera supports the higher transfer speeds, you may end up paying for something of little use. |

I have used both and have had equal luck with the two. Do keep in mind that with all the new high capacity cards on the market the 1, 2, and 4 gig cards aren't always the best choice unless you are going to have more than one. I was taking some photos several years ago right after 512mb cards came out. I had just baught the camera and the camera guy talked me into the big card. "You don't need two or three cards you just need this one big one.", he said. Well thats fine. When your taking pictures for someone and you run into an error message or the card whimps out on you and all you have is that expensive high capacity card your up the creek with out a paddle. It is only on an average $30.00 more to get four 256mb cards than one 1gig card. Atleast if one goes down weither it is CF or MS you still have plenty of cards to use.
Just a bit of advise from exp.

Compact Flash is much more widely used and is made by several different firms, therefore the prices are much lower. Memory Stick prices are held at an artificially high level by Sony.

I dont know much about cf, but i use a memory stick. not all card readers have access for ms, and every now and then one of my cards has a corrupt photo. and i have lost data once on a card from removing it improperly. If that ever happens you can get photo recovery software to get your pictures back. |

I don't have any knowledge of cf as I use ms. The only problem I have had is when trying to get copies directly from my Magic Gate 256mb pro stick at Walmart's machine. It won't read it. Also, our Sony Tv has a port for viewing memory sticks, but the max is 128mb. So, again, the pro stick is out. I had to replace one(the dog chewed it...took it right out of my jacket pocket)and because of these problems I bought a 128 again. |
