Hey all. I've always been the girl with the camera, but skills are not there. The love came first... I've only just invested in a slight upgrade from my 2 Powershot A series in a row to the Powershot G10. I couldn't quite muster the SLR price this go round, but I'm finding this camera to be a good teacher for learning shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc. The best I've been able to hope for is to take a million pictures and take about 100 of them for keeps, edit 70 of those and come up with a fairly nice album. :) 100/1,000,000 ratio.. is that any good. :P

I am an artist; example:

...so composition comes somewhat natural to me. (Sorry, pic quality sucks, taken while still in the glass... maybe on a less lazy day I'll take it off the wall, out of its frame and line up a lot more of my artwork) What actually compels me to photography is that when I take a photograph I get excited about, I then want to recreate it in art. So far its been mostly industrial, close up flowers, nature, stuff like that. I lost all of my online portfolio to a dead end website, but I hope to have it back up soon.

I have entered one photo on the Serious Street photos side challenge thread, Entered the Ground Up just to get a feel for the way the board works. I just uploaded a pic I am happy to have taken for the High Contrast.

I enjoy viewing everyone's entries and have been voting as much as the site lets me. I'm considering membership but money is a little red right now.

I'm from Jacksonville, FL, work as a dog groomer (so if you visit my photobucket site, you'll see lots of dogs in cages or freshly groomed.. don't miss the most recent uploads of a mohawked Yorkie...I'm a bit of a newlywed (not quite a year) and loving it. I'm

hoping to upgrade to a full SLR one day...once I feel educated enough to pick a good one and deserve it!

No more "auto" for me! :)

Jessica

That ratio is about as good as any pro photographer : )
Welcome and upload some shots for us to see in a contest

Oh and I want to rely less on photoshop. :)

I certainly hope I didn't put myself up there with a pro! Maybe because my friends all give me their cameras because "you take the best pictures"... Having an artist's eye, I have the ability to see composition well, just no idea how to transfer what is in my mind's eye into the eye of the lens.

Welcome to DPC. Florida is a great place for shooting pictures. It's good that you are jumping into the fray, and entering challenges. Don't let the first few entries turn you off on being here if you get some not so pretty comments. Even the best shots get dinged by some people in comments.
Side challenges are the most fun for me, and you get to meet other members and build friendships that way.
I look fwd to seeing how you shoot. If you have a portfolio on another site, you can post a link here by using the 6th icon directly above the post a reply box.
Have fun, learn much.

Oh, gawd, that's a heck of a leap. What do you have to base this supposition on?

Don't worry about it yet Jessica (you have to know DPC history). Welcome to this wonderful community. There is another DPC'er somewhere near you (in the direction of Hilliard I think) by the name of idnic. She would be a great contact here on DPC, whether in person or via this site.

Waddy and I agree. I love the side challenges.
Welcome and remember to have fun. The most important person's opinion of your photo is you!!
Enjoy yourself.

Well I hope that by visiting my Photobucket you'll see just exactly who I am since I'm the one washing the big great dane in the tub at work. :) Hilliard, alas, isn't very close at all but I'm hoping to learn from someone extremely capable close by! For now I'll self teach.

Laugh. One of the cool perks at my job.. Lots of lovin' on critters. The two groomers I work with both are suckers for any abandoned creature. In the last two weeks the addition of a baby bat, another raccoon and a newborn pug that has a cleft palate. The owner brought it in to be put to sleep but she said she would hand raise it and then get it the surgery it needed when its old enough.

I should probably put my actual "photography" in some separate folder but as stuff gets uploaded from my phone, my other point and shoot camera and other people's phones it's kind of a myriad of quality on there. But no doubt.. I have a fun life! :)

Jessie.

Beer?? Where? Cravin' some Blue Moon.

Okay, first I have to kick Shannon in the shins.

Second, I'm actually just south of Jax in GCS.

Third, welcome. Please feel free to give me a call or send me a message and I'd be glad to help when and however I can. You can get my contact info from my website penrodstudios.com :)

If I'm decent then you all must be the pinnacle!!

P.S. I love your stuff idnic! Isn't self portraiture fun?

Thank you all for the warm welcome.. I've already spent many hours browing... It's so unstructured.. Click on this user name, then her fav, then look through the entire challenge, then look at that picture's user, then look through his portfolio, then click on thumbnail, click through this challenge, read this forum entry...etc etc. :)

Oh yeah, that's right. I sometimes get Green Cove Springs and Hilliard confused. It's weird, I know, but there is a reason why.

Well, I'm happy to meet everyone. Thank for the well (and not so well, if I'm Rose, or a rose... or something like that) wishes. I'm enjoying the stimulating challenges, but the waiting kills me!

Keeping fingers crossed for my High Contrast challenge entry.

Welcome to the madhouse, Jess! I'll be moving to the area next month as well. (Kingsland, GA, actually. . . about 30 min north of Jax.)

That's awesome! I want one for my future wetbar outside (and my future swimming pool and billiards room)... I can dream! :)
But definitely, very cool stained glass.
