Yup... that's an excellent point, too! Let's make lemonade out of lemons, if that's what we get :)
For those of us who will be in the area overnight, the weather might give us some really cool early morning opportunities, too... like mist at the base of the falls, etc.
Hopefully Nikolai's model is waterproof :) I just bought a couple extra ponchos just in case! |

It's been raining here in Scranton all week, with near-solid overcast. I don't put a lot of faith in the weather services for more than a day in the future. But, I think we can expect more overcast and possibly rain showers, although they haven't been lasting long when they've hit this week.
As was mentioned, all this rain should make the falls really spectacular!

What is there to do in Scranton on Saturday if Steamtown is a washout? |

Not that this is a great alternative if it rains, but I saw it on the news this morning, thought it might be interesting to check out: //www.rivercommon.org/ here's a direct link to the brochure of what's going on: //www.wvwc.org/GetReadyforRiverFest09.pdf.
Here's another site, it should load to the events calendar page, you can click thru the dates: //pahomepage.com/content/features/onlineweekend?adjust=0&date=20&submit_action=daily_list
I still don't know if I'll be making it or not. Brian has a race Friday & Saturday near Rochester, NY as long as they don't rain out. It'll depend on how things go there & what time we get back if I'll be there or not.... Hope to see you all again this year! :) |

With all this rain, I'd bet the falls are going to be really moving fast. Maybe too fast. Does anyone know if they close the trails because of too much rain?
I have a wedding to shoot on Saturday and with that River thing going on, and something at the Courthouse, I'm not going to have a place to do my formals.
Rain rain go away. |

Sad to say, but I spend most rainy days in Scranton sitting at home. There's a lot of neat places in and nearby the city, but they require good weather to be enjoyed. Granted, the Steamtown museum is indoors, and quite interesting, but many of the locomotives are outside. The Steamtown Mall is just across the tracks - no photo ops, but you could kill a couple of hours there.
There's always the Anthracite Museum; I haven't been yet, but I hear it's an interesting tour. It's also underground, so I imagine you'll need a flash...
In the event that the weather doesn't suck, here are some things you could go see:
- Steamtown (they also offer train rides that run out of town a ways for $3)
- Scranton Iron Furnaces - small site that I've only driven by, but it looks interesting and is on my list of places to visit.
- Lackawanna State Park - about 20 minutes north on I-81
- Ford Pond - 25 minutes from Scranton, small fishing area where I do a lot of birding shots - small but cute
- Frances Slocum State Park - near Wilkes-Barre/Dallas, PA. Some nice hikes, but head away from the family/picnic areas to find good shots.
- There's a hiking trail along a stream/gorge in Wilkes-Barre as well; I haven't been yet, and need to find my hiking book again to get the details, but it sounded cool.
Is anyone who's coming interested in meeting up Sat evening, if we have decent weather (aka not raining)? I'm stuck at a graduation party in Wilkes-Barre during the afternoon, but like I said earlier, I'll gladly skip out around 5 to meet up with folks, either down that way, or back in Scranton.

There are no advisories on the DCNR webpage; the trails are listed as open since 6 April. Last time I went down to Ricketts, I forgot to check the webpage first and got there find that the trails were still closed do to ice (this was in late March). There were signs at the lower parking lot, as well as on the little wooden bridge you cross as you start to hike up the trail.
If someone who is arriving early on Saturday wants to check and make sure, it can't hurt - but from what I can find, everything is still open.

Yep, down to 30% chance of showers - ought to be a pretty decent day. The overcast will be better for shooting the falls anyway.
Since it sounds like some of the crowd is leaving for Ricketts tomorrow, how about a quick recap? As far as I can tell, the trail is open. HOWEVER, this is posted:
5/7/2009 3:38:00 PM
As of May 7, 2009, Organized Group Tent Camping, the Bear Walk Trail, and Lake Rose Road and Parking Lot will be closed due to construction projects. The construction should be completed by late Summer 2009. The Beach area is open, but swimming will not be permitted until May 23, 2009. Due to construction of the new beach house, the old beach house has been demolished. Portable toilets have been provided for public use in this area. Please stay out of the fenced off construction area for your own safety. Hikers will be able to access the Falls Trail from the Rt. 118 parking lots and also from Beach Lot #2-the Glen Leigh trailhead.
Looking at the map, this is the parking lot we used last year. So those of us who are at the top will have to park elsewhere.
Edited to add map link

So now we're going to meet at the bottom and take a few vehicles up to start the trail walk?

Let's not attempt to move the meeting place at this point... let's stick with the original plan of meeting at the Visitor's Center, please. I would worry that not everyone would get the word about a change with the date being this close.
I'll research this when I get there tomorrow afternoon, and I'll find out what our best option will be as far as moving cars from there.

Do we have an official meeting spot for those of us who will be getting there on Saturday? Accuweather is showing thunderstorms in the area until about 4pm. I planned to get up there around that time. What's the Saturday evening scoop? |

I have no idea who might be coming to RG tomorrow (Saturday). I'm planning on leaving tomorrow morning around 9:00, and I'll probably get up that way by mid afternoon. If anyone wants to get together with me on Saturday late afternoon/evening, drop me a PM with a cell number, or just give me a call tomorrow if you already have my number. I'm up for whatever -- I hope to see some folks up there tomorrow! |

Scranton has had steady, hard rain all morning - it just stopped a few minutes ago, but the radar shows a bit more scattered rain on the way.
Tomorrow is back up to a 40% chance from 1100 onwards :-(

Mermaids aren't real?
Jeez, last year I find out that Santa was just some fat guy the mall hires and now this. I don't know what to believe anymore. |
