From the article it sounds more like digital is the only thing going to save Kodak - the title of this thread seems a bit backwards ...

This is sad.
And recently announcing they were no longer going to manufacture film cameras.

Although digital will probably end up saving Kodak, it is still because of digital that 20% of Kodak employees will soon be out of work.

along the theme of the thread title, my kodak 3mp camera was terrible.
i would like to meet the folks that tested its power consumption, and charging system - and imagine they are part of the 20% layoff group...

for $500 when we bought it, i cursed daily at the rechargable battery.

seriously 3 pictures w/o the flash, and the battery would be dead, i must have spent $200 on disposable batteries. ( which would last for a couple hundred shots )... i wont purchase another kodak camera....

EDIT: i can say that when you could get the autofocus to do what you wanted it did take decent photos...

No it is because Kodak management relied on film for too long. In an early 2003 report they even said that the customer transition to digital was going much faster (years) than they had anticipated.
So they were too late with their full frame digital, don't offer an amateur SLR yet and are only in the market for simple point and shoot digitals and thus lack models in the line of the F717/828, 602/7000, D7/A1, G5/S50 etc.

For how long?
The 14N is a mix of components from other factories. A Nikon body, Fillfactory ccd etc. Now that Canon is switching to Taiwan for assembly, how long can Kodak keep on assembling in the US?

They need to act soon. PMA?

Kodak is behind in the digital era, and it is costing them a fortune trying to make a comparable camera.

Some of you may disagree with this but kodak has some of the best film out there and the paper quality is fantastic. Instead of spending the fortune trying to make a digital camera that can compete with prices of others out there they should emphasized the digital papers and work towards a consumer printer that is able to print images with the quality we all desire. (Although, Wal Mart may not like that idea to well after all they do have the Kodak Picture Maker in every store)

Yeah if they are up and running at the time needing to use them! I have 5.0MP kodak DX4530, for the money on the camera it is better then samsung or HP point and shoot cameras, but their software programs really are terrible! Anyone wanting free photo editor should not download Kodaks, The program tries to take over everything and when you conifigure it so it wont load on start it then runs slow and makes pc do wierd things, Them picture makers they are running on 2000 professional, ( mine too) They are rarely working out of 3 different ones I visited 10 occasions to get prints made this past holiday and was able to use them twice. So I dont know, they got to improve on their software major for the digital world and for it to be compatible with windows and other browsers.

They have been the leaders in the dye-sub printer market for years.
