I feel my photography has been improving, but most of the time my scores float around the same area.
Both of these recent challenge entries I felt were way better than some stuff I have done in the past that scored higher. They did well enough for me, both coming in with a respectable mid-5.
I thought I managed to get an incredible amount of detail into this eagle shot, but it still got a "meh" from enough people to hold it down. I can only assume I didn't have enough of the elusive wow-factor.
I thought this one was an interesting and unique subject that fit the challenge perfectly, and I was very pleased with my lighting and camera work on it. Still managed only a mid-packish placement, so I was somewhat disappointed.
I'm not sure if this was my sense of humor, the photography was not as good as I thought, or if the potty humor put some people off.
I'm scratching my head wondering if my improvements are simply in my own head, or if the voting has truly become harsher since I have been here (as others have suggested). It's hard to really tell when most of the feedback is either positive, or does not address the reasons for a low vote.
If you voted a 5 or less on either of these, your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Thanks for all the feedback. It seems that many did not understand what was unusual about the pig object. I guess I should have used a title that simply described it as a "Pooping pig candy dispenser", but I hate using deadpan titles like that. At one time it seemed easy to at least get a high 5, but now either the voting has gotten harsher or my preferences and style are starting to deviate from what gains the higher votes here.

On the recent "Rocks,Pebbles Boulders" I got scores all over the map;
1-3
2-8
3-23
4-44
5-90
6-30
7-9
8-7
9-1
10-1
for a "grand" total of 4.7778.
Now I'm pretty new to challenge entries. I thought my image was within the parameters of the challenge and decently, if unspectacularly, composed. My feeling is that there are some voters, you know who you are, who vote down other's work so theirs will vote higher. It really cheapens the whole site. |

It does happen to some extent, but more often it is due to a member who has differing criteria from most people. For instance Ubique will give a default vote of 3 to any entry that does not have immediate impact on him, because it is of "no consequence" and that is his default vote. Posthumous is similar in that regard. Appealing to one of these folks artistic sense is considered an achievement.
The bigger issue to me, is getting people to leave comments explaining the low votes. We all want to think our entries are worthy of more, and it is frustrating to just get a vote telling you it sucks without knowing why. May I encourage you to help by commenting more, especially on those entries that you give 4's and 5's? |

I would suggest that you look at the voting breakdown for your entry and see that participants and non-participants voted very similarly on your entry.
Voting 'down' other entries can happen but I really feel that it is limited in this site. What is more likely is that voters have very different criteria for voting, whether it be composition, interest, that 'wow' factor, artistic impression, 'it moved me', 'i hate rocks', 'i give every dog picture a 10', what not. It is how the site works, but overall, the most popular images with good technicals score better.
What does tend to happen is that artistic image often get left behind in scoring, but they tend to garner the lion share of 'favorites' and side challenge awards. It is generally a good balance overall. |
