Well this is going to be interesting. Not many people know how to grunge a photo without using texture layers in processing. Maybe there is a lift on that rule for this challenge. Can SC jump in here with any details to help the questions that will no doubt come up?
05/13/2009 01:32:07 AM · #2
Texture layers?? I think folks should step outside of their homes for some of that natural makeup called "dirt."
05/13/2009 01:40:55 AM · #3
I see no reason why texture layers would be allowed. It is just standard advanced editing, which does not allow for textures. Just my two cents.
05/13/2009 01:50:50 AM · #4
My 2 cents worth is that in this instance 'grunge' is not referring to the processing technique per se, but the overall 'feel' of the entry....as opposed to the 'glamour' challenge.

can someone show some examples of grunge...i'm unsure of what it REALLY is...i dont want to be totally off with my entry
05/13/2009 01:55:41 AM · #6
I am pleased that I brought up this subject as I know that some people see Grunge as textures as in the natural sense whilst others see it as an overlay used in processing. Some may not know that there is more than one type of grunge. Hence my thread on the subject...to try and make it clear for everyone.

Thanks for that Bear, I had become locked in a theme with this one based around the youth culture but now I can see many alternatives.

It's easy, it's obvious, it's attitude.

I think this text from Grunge.com which although is a music site pretty much captures the definition of 'grunge' for me. Hope it helps...

"The GRUNGE aesthetic is characterized by a layer of abrasive filth which roughens an underlying source of beauty to soften its presence and make it more palatable to a jaded audience. This applies to grunge as applied to music, type, design and fashion. True beauty can be hard to look at or listen to directly, because it has been homogenized through repetition in modern mass media. A contrasting grunge facade can enhance the artistic experience by providing a yin to the yang..."

It certainly helped me to rethink what/how I might go about shooting for this challenege.

Well, I should have taken a picture of my dog after she took a dive into the cow poop. You would've almost smell it too LOL.

LOL, well I'm not going to let her do that again, just for the fun of this challenge, took me long time to get rid of the smell the last time.

I assumed that since it's opposite of glamor that it was more dirty-grungy than pop-culture.

Excuse my ignorant if my questions sounds stupid,
But usually, where there are two advance challenges, they are most of the time the opposite, Yen and Yan, Light and Darkness, Good Evil, and now Glamor and Grunge, I thought Grunge might be a portrait taken in a situation totally opposite of glamor, rough portrait, street capture for the poor.
As I said, sorry if my questions sounds stupid, it is better to sound stupid here than to get DQ,
Any examples?

I don't think this has to have a person in it. You can take a picture of, lets say shoes for example. You can make a nice pair of ladies shoes look glamorous or some old boots look grungy. The challenge description doesn't say "portrait".

Mmmm, still have no idea for this one. I live in the midst of a rather clean nature, no industries, no pollution, no glamour either as it comes to that.

Maybe I should send my dog out anyway to roll over in the cow's poop, but then you all know it's mine LOL

In case people didn't see the bottom of the thread, Bear_Music did a great job of providing many definitions for grunge. I think we need to remember all these are appropriate approaches when voting this coming week....
