I actually agree with Joe on this but I understand not wanting to shut down the airlines and subways.

On another note...It seems that whenever Joe says something "out of line" or at least against the current dogma of the White House the media simply says..."That's Joe"...It would save a lot of ink if everyone just said "That's Savage" or "That's Hannity" or "That's Limbaugh" when they say stupid things !

The advice, while difficult to impliment, is not completely crazy. There is at least a logical process behind it. Truth is, the closer you are to the American/Mexican border, the more likely your exposure, although air travel also contributes. With that in mind, you probably raise your risk meeting someone who has just come from Mexico (your "illegal alien") than meeting someone who has just come from Canada. How much do you raise your risk? Probably not a ton, but it does go up.

So while I can't agree that the advice is practical and should be followed, I also think some of the backlash here is purely because it's coming from a right-wing nutjob.

Joe Biden likely gave some decent advice, but because it can lead to panic if it's viewed as the policy of our leaders he was slapped down. That's Joe. I think sometimes he just speaks his heart and damn the politics and position. If I were in New York and things started spreading, the Subway would be the first place I'd avoid and I'd recommend my family avoid it as well.

I'm sorry, Dave, what more do you want from me? A penance appended to my apology?

Actually (and I know you might glare at me ferociously for saying so), a simple "You're right, that was wrong of me, I'm sorry" would have done wonders :)

Well, I actually DID apologize, as soon as I read his response. And then again, and asked if I needed to do penance... Which BeeCee has already assigned and which I'll fulfill if she ever shows up at my door, but I'm afraid travel's out right now what with this flu pandemic and all :-)

I made a bestiality joke earlier in this thread (hidden by Shannon, too hot for DPC) and Bear called me a bigot. I think he's just been a bit grumpy lately. :-D

ETA... someone needs to send him some chocolate chip cookies. :-)

Aren't bears usually grumpy in the spring? Wakened from a good sleep, hungry... wait, that's me. Never mind :)

I didn't mean it as an "excuse" as much as an explanation that I wasn't actually *seriously* calling anyone a moron... FWIW. The apology was sincere. And I'm not glaring...

You should be! :)

Alright, alright. I'll ease up on you, you poor thing. You probably have Cape Cod Bear Flu, after being exhausted by your interview questions. Get me those follow ups, and we'll get you smiling again once the thing is up for all to see!

Ah, then your reading is fine and it's your comprehension that's lacking. My bad. Certainly more than 1 and 9 people have died from this flu. It's just that the others haven't been confirmed yet. Some of those 9 people had already died of the flu before the cause was identified (when the confirmed number was zero). So when the Mexican casualty figure goes up, most of those won't be new deaths. They'll simply be confirmations of the cause. Likewise, the recent increase in the number of U.S. cases has been generally a matter of recognizing that the illness they were already suffering from was in fact this flu (most were already recovering by the time the bug was identified.)

Hey, I chuckled when I saw "morons" because it came from Bear, so he was obviously joking. Had it been from one of our more antagonistic members, then I might have thought differently. However, not everyone knows the personalities well enough to understand that context.

But I don't think it was "stupid". Irresponsible perhaps, but only from the "causing panic" part and not because it's actually bad advice for avoiding the flu.

The truth is the government desperately needs us to still go out and spend money, but the truth also is that's not in our individual best interest if we're faced with a pandemic. Staying home from work and not going to Applebees is what's in our best interest. They are trying to ride the fence and it's this part of government that sort of annoys me. Hey, Joe was speaking out for the common man and not for the USA as a whole. Why should I be upset with that?

Nor is staying indoors bad advice for avoiding lightning strikes. Paranoid, yes, but not bad advice.

You can't honestly equate the two Shannon. Let me step back and restate that I'm talking about if pandemic is fully going on. We're not there yet. Right now, the lightning strike analogy is probably pertinent. If there are hudrends and thousands of cases in your community? Not so much.

Well, see, the thing of it is, when bears go into glare mode the workflow screeches to a halt... See what you've done?

(Actually, I've just got to choose the two pics you are demanding and it is finished...)

i think you're underestimating how much people really really like bacon

The way I was looking at that, I sorta wondered if someone needed a bunch of bacon for their dog, or for some picky-eater kids, something like that. I'd have to assume the bacon was on the side, or the stack would be immense :-)

Why do you insist on insulting me? I did nothing but engage thoughtfully in this forum called: "Mexican Swine Flu - we're all gonna die!!!!"

Thanks Bear...Dr. Achoo...for replies that are thoughtful and give insight.

They are directly comparable. Staying indoors is good advice during a lightning storm, too. In a pandemic situation it would make sense to avoid crowded areas, but as you said we're not there yet. So telling people to stay out of the subways now is akin to huddling in a storm cellar every time it rains. The basic advice is sound, but it's an overreaction.

They are having an extensive discussion of the flu situation over at Science Friday, including an interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
National Institutes of Health.

You've engaged, but "thoughtfully" is open to debate. May I remind you that your first post to the thread was a derogatory insult in response to why it's called Swine Flu:
Originally posted by kenskid:

To say that this pathogen has only killed 10 people is a gross mischaracterization at best. To do so in response to an explanation of confirmed vs. suspected cases suggests a lack of comprehension.

Shannon, for you to keep hammering on him like this seems unnecessarily aggressive to me. I think he's right to feel singled out and attacked by you, honestly. It doesn't *matter* whether his opinions are right or wrong, there's no excuse for you to be belittling him like this. You're calling the man dumb and clueless in pretty definitive terms. That's not the way to further debate, surely you understand that?

I noted that not everyone would necessarily agree that beginning a discussion with an insult is 'engaging thoughtfully,' and that he apparently didn't comprehend the difference between "confirmed" deaths and actual death toll when an actual cause must be identified in each case. Ken may very well be a highly intelligent person, but both statements are demonstrably true, and nothing further was intended.

Jeepers, this thread's still in General Discussion?! ;-)

Now your posts are getting pretty funny. To take my original post some days ago..."It only affects people who are less than 6 feet tall and weigh more than 350lbs." and somehow say it is a derogatory insult is reaching. The title of this whole thread is LIGHTHEARTED. You've contiuously been harsh on me and now IMO trying to justify it by saying I started the whole thing by my very first post is comical !

EDIT: Unless I'm insulted again and can't control myself...I'll end it here. Thanks.

This entire thread is offensive to both Mexicans and Swine by the label of this flu. My politically correct sensitivities are causing my feelings to be hurt. I move that this thread be stricken from the record.

Bearmusic is name-calling and Shannon is misbehaving. No good can come of this evil, incorrect thread.
