Mentioned 04/28/2009 12:43:07 PM, and your figure is far too low. "Typically, in a year's normal two flu seasons (one per hemisphere), there are between three and five million cases of severe illness and up to 500,000 deaths worldwide."
ETA- Good info.

"Never let the facts get in the way of a good story." (not my quote)
The coverage on H1N1 reminds me of a couple of summers ago--every newscast in Central CA led with West Nile Virus, shots of county abatement trucks fogging neighborhoods, overlay maps showing the location of the latest dead bird find, etc. etc. I'm not saying it was blown out of proportion... |

"The United Nations said the mass cull of up to 300,000 pigs was "a real mistake" because the new viral strain – a mix of swine, avian and human viruses – has not actually been found in pigs.
Still, on Thursday, the state began confiscating animals anyway.
Police and health officials arrived at Sayed̢۪s house early in the morning Thursday. They threatened to arrest him if he did not surrender the animals, and after hitting him on the head and legs several times, he gave in.
When he arrived at the slaughterhouse with the animals, he received no compensation from the government, instead he was actually charged for the cost of slaughtering the pigs."

That's a Whopper with Cheese at 5.79, FIFTEEN extra bacons at .60 each, then a Bacon Double Melt Value Meal at 5.49 with medium fries and medium coke, and that's just the part we can see :-) NINE BUCKS of bacon added, lawd spare us...

See my post, previous.
A lardoon is a slender cylinder of fat, inserted into a piece of meat with a big, hollow needle. |

I'd have called it a lardon, but I checked and both forms seem fine. Lardoon *may* be more generic than lardon, as lardon refers specifically to pork fat, at least in French cuisine. And we use lardons in salads quite often, actually: the less lah-di-dah among us refer to them as "bacon bits" :-)
But to get back to the point, yeah the lawd/lard/lord pun was what I was after, he said in his best Hahvadd accent...

my best friend and my 2 year old godson were supposed to come out to my school last night for a photoshoot. My friend had said that he hadn't been feeling well but she thought he just had allergies because he is normally very healthy. Well, the last couple days he has started having constant diarrhea, a sore throat and a 102 fever. And did I mention that his dad came back from Mexico last week? Eek! So she said "we can still make it if you leave right now" and I was like "ummmm, nooo, that's ok. go to the Dr." The doc took a test sample and gave him a shot of antibiotics which he was none too happy about.
here's some pics of him. He's probably just got a regular flu, but wish him well please!

If the doctor gave him a shot of antibiotics, it's probably not the flu. Antibiotics don't work on viruses. (as has been noted) |

I hope they got a blood test. They'd know quickly if it were the bad strain.
They've already closed one school here. |

Cooking IS my hobby, Dave :-) Ask your gal Juliet... Or, for that matter, Generale, Kirbic, Pawdrix, Ray Ethier, Beetle, Melethia, and others I'm sure I've forgotten to list.

i didn't say antibiotics SHOULDN'T be used - i said they are overused... that's a bit different.
i'm glad the docs caught the issue early enough to be treated... or i'm glad the docs knew what they were prescribing, and for what...
Originally posted by vawendy: Considering that my husband has rocky mountain spotted fever. Considering that untreated, it has a 30% mortality rate. I like antibiotics. Are the being over-prescribed? Yes. Are they probably being over-prescribed for rocky mountain spotted fever? yes--urgent care prescribed them early--they didn't wait for the week long test. Was this good? yes, in my husband's case. Instead of having to be hospitalized, like a large fraction of the cases--he was just very sick. |
you are, however, over simplifying the whole situation. farm animals are given antibiotics when they aren't sick. why ? so they don't get sick... what comes of that ? well swine flu for one IMO...
i've had 5 or more deer ticks on me at a single time. i didn't get sick. could your husband be more susceptible to infection because of past antiobiotic use ? just a question. not a jab.

i've never had a flu shot and i've never had the flu either. my anecdotal evidence sort of supports yours. then again, i have a rock that supposedly scares away tigers and i've never been bitten by a tiger ;) |
