Perhaps another way to ask the question (without hammering it to death) is why do shots slightly out of the ordinary (and I do not mean technically awful or zz's shot in praticular) seem to rub us the wrong way as a community? I am sure that I too am guilty of marking unusual shots lower than deserve, perhaps because as one person said we do not look at the shot for very long...unfotunate for us I think, in that we miss a lot. Thank you all for your thoughts, and for a civilized discussion.

(and glimpses i am not offended, my fan club is very small so I try to be patient with them : )

soup--i think the green leaves are stunning! Very beautiful light. The other also captures a nice light coming thru, tho I find it has a lot of background info...maybe to shoot with higher aperature? just a thought. Does have a moody feel tho.

I think it's impossible to ask a viewer to spend any significant amount of time thinking about a single photo in the context of a challenge. These images don't really rub anyone the wrong way. I think the short of the matter is that a shot like the one here does not jump out at anyone with flare and flamboyance and scream "give me a high score". They tend to make the voters wonder what the hell they are supposed to be seeing. Your original analysis of this photo makes sense to me. Whether or not I would have come to a similar conclusion on my own or not is another matter.

Is it 'art'? Absolutely. Why? Because someone finds something artistic about it. Is it stock? Absolutely. Why? Because someone could probably find a stock use for it.

'Art' must be determined by each individual viewer. You can't simply label an image as 'art' in general. Doing so generates the responses you see here in this thread. People want to make a point about why it is NOT art rather than try to figure out why it is. I find it comforting to determine 'art' on my own and then keep it to myself or share it with the artist only. Whether or not anyone agrees with me is irrelevant.

In that case they should rename Art Galleries to Item Galleries :) A lot of the famous "Art" (I'm thinking of the sliced up cow in the Tate that won the Turner Prize for example) doesn't really seem like art to me. If I don't think it's art, why is it an art gallery.

As we can do with most things, lets blame the media! :P

...photography is a puzzling art because everyone owns a camera and most people take pics but not everyone owns canvas and brushes, so for some photos to be "artsy" and some not...it is too hard to discern.

Lynn thanks for this thread. I find it interesting reading when people discuss Art.

Konador

This is SHOCK Art. It has its place in the Art world. And in a lot of ways the highest scoring photos on this site have a certain shock (or slap you in the face clean slick) look about them. This is not meant to be a bad thing. This is a photo challenges site, not an Artist photo site.

I find that zeuszen has the ability to put his Art into his pictures. In his site is any number of examples. There is the general feeling (My interpretation only) of solitude and longing. The small confronted with the limitless and the great isolation this can impose.
