We rented an olllld cottage for the weekend, and the door had a windbreak on two sides that were originally, I think, old doors of multipaned glass. This little guy had gotten in and didn't seem to realise that if he just turned around 180 degrees he could fly right out again.

When we came home from the beach he was clinging to the molding, perfectly still, fluttered a bit like a moth against a lamp as we approached, then settled again, face pressed tight against the window. After a while I decided he just couldn't stay there, so I got out a towel and, with great care, managed to wrap him and carry him out. He was so light that I couldn't even tell if I had him until I moved the towel away from the glass.
It was sooooooo nice seeing him zip away, apparently unharmed :)

It's amazing how frail and insubstantial a little bird is, no? And when they tremble in your hands (I catch them in cupped hands) the pitch is so high it's incredible...

Lol, yeah yeah. I actually took this one as we approached up the path and I first saw him, before I realised he didn't know how to get out. :P

I was too afraid of hurting him with my clumsy big hands to try that with something sooooo incredibly tiny :( I read that it takes FIFTY of them to weigh as much as a cup of water.) I love the powerful birds like eagles and vultures but I am in total awe of hummingbirds.

edit to close my brackets.

Glad you got him out.

The silly little things used to get stuck in my garage all the time, and they are so fragile!

I never lost one, but I sure had a hard time herding them out some days with the fifteen foot ceiling!

when I was a kid, we rescued a bird that had gotten into our house. wrapped him in a towel, stepped out the front door and let him go.

Our cat was hiding behind the hedge...

So you are not angry with my screwing around in your thread.

Anyway to come to OP.

I really never remember doing something as good as setting a bird free or helping any animal.

But there are few things that had profound impact on me. There are lot of incidents but from most memorables. I remember when i was i think less than 5 years old. I lived in a small village. We used to have our fields. One day i saw a cute little rabbit roaming around. And next thing i remember is that i ate that poor thing for dinner. This was probably earliest thing that still i feel sad thinking about.

Anyway during around the same time. In india we call animal sacrifice. On some occasion my family did that. (actually i remember it done twice). That particular day, just before that animal was killed i remember that he could sense that he was about to be killed. He was shivering. I did eat him too for dinner.
But these thoughts never left me. Every time i thought about it I felt sad.
Anyway fast forward few years, when i was 15 i did stop eating non vegetarian. I can not think about eating another animal.

so the most hurtful thing that someone (actually my wife) say to me is, when we visit supermarket and she tells me today chicken is cheap. Can i buy it.
And I start thinking about how cheap today life has become. It takes few just yens to enjoy someone's flesh.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
PS: If I had to narrate the supermarket thing like i did about pussy. It would go something like this.

Whenever we visit nearby supermarket. My wife looks around. Her face lights up. And she tells me - look darling now a days, cocks are so cheap. Can I have one.

I don't think anyone was asking you to narrate the supermarket thing like that.

Yeah, it's kinda warped, I guess, how I have no problem eating meat and yet I get so upset about individual animals, especially wild ones...
