Fun or not, game or not. DPC is something that some of us put a great deal of effort into when we plan, take, process, and submit entries. We are emotionally coupled to that effort and the hope it will be rewarded (not by a little graphic ribbon but by people liking what we put together). Getting a DQ is the ultimate blow back against that effort, that regardless of the effort and emotion put into an entry it has been killed.
It is like going on road trip vacation and half way through finding out you only have enough gas to return home, not continue to your destination. Sure you had fun up to that point, but it doesn't feel like it at that moment, you curse, you kick your car tire, maybe you toss your kids out and tell them to hitchhike. It isn't a fun day.
So I think that joke may have really invoked those feelings in some members who for a moment thought the emails were real. Once an emotion and impact is registered it doesn't vanish instantly.
More than the joke, I do find the mocking attitudes to this subject and those bothered by it distasteful. Who are you to tell someone that their feelings don't matter or shouldn't matter because they disagree with the "humor" involved?
Again, I wasn't personally affected, I caught the thread before I had checked my email. My first impression was, "WTF, langdons script has gone haywire!" Then I checked and saw my entry was still there and thought, "Oh a joke, try to fool people into thinking their entries are deleted, how funny." sighed and went onto other things then to bed.
It wasn't that I thought the joke was either funny or stupid, but because I knew that like any joke played en masse that some would be hurt by it, and that bothered me, and still does. |

So if someone called in a bomb threat on April 1st to get a reaction, and people reacted, that would make it funny? Since that seems to be the only qualifier for what is a good joke or a poor one.

It is quite well recognized in many countries. |
It spreads its slimy trickery around the globe. If it is around April 1st and something unexpected happens, better believe it is an April Fool! But there are plenty of people who get suckered and there always will be these types, and they gripe about it not being fair that the bait was so real, they got hooked.
Just watch next year for confirmation:)) |

The reason why the dpc joke was so great is because people are so upset over it. The reaction is all that matters, that makes the joke "good". So obviously the bigger the reaction and the more upset the better. So a bomb threat would be the perfect joke, maybe people would even trample one another...
This is obviously false! and stupid! I thought that would be obvious! If the measure of a joke is how many people it upsets then society is truly and royally F**KED!

Your kidding right, how in this day and age can you compare a bomb threat to a April Fool's joke. Gez get over it !!
What I was trying to say: it was a harmless joke and when people react to a harmless joke you know your joke worked.
Your analogy to a bomb threat is very insensitive and shows a lack of decorum.
What this joke has confirmed is that a lot of people here take this site way to serious. |

Nobody takes the challenges around here seriously, so nobody would be upset if they thought their entry had been disqualified. Nobody received the email after the 1st, so nobody was sure that this was, indeed, an april fools prank.
Nobody likes a good joke, as long as it doesn't bring the integrity of the site into question. It wasn't Freakin Halarious at first, but it was funny once the initial concerns were allayed.
The bottom line; Nobody enjoyed this. |

I'm not sure how many people got the emails (or when), but the original idea was to randomly target people who posted in the scores threads. Those folks would probably catch on pretty quickly once they saw others in the threads with the same problem, and therefore be less likely to take it badly. |

Some folk really need to get out more... Oh, it wasn't sent to everyone in free-study? Ok, then I'm a bit more accepting. Someone should have said that before I wasted a rant! It takes a lot of effort to build those up. I don't just pull them out of my rump like some people think I do. It takes time and sometimes a lot of bird seed to put together.

No, what this whole thing has made abundantly clear is that there are only certain people allowed to make certain types of tasteless, inane, stupid pranks, and that there's no actual rules to it.
Some people will get jerked around, called names, have bad feelings, and they're all assholes if they don't think it's funny.
If you cannot see that there were people that were needlessly made to be concerned because they were of the impression that a DQ is a serious thing, then maybe you ought to rethink your level of compassion and understanding.
It *WAS* stupid and childish, and just because some people say that people that got caught out don't have a sense of humor doesn't make it so.
