Hi. For my AS/A Level coursework in design and technology I have to identify problems with one of my hobbies and design and make a solution. As part of it, I need to conduct a survey to find out what problems people actually encounter. I would really appreciate it if you could take a little time to answer a few questions. Thanks in advance.
---
How often do you use your camera? Once a week / Twice a week / 3-6 times a week / Every day
Where do you mostly use it? Inside / Outside
If outside, please select the weather condition(s) you have used it in:
Warm and Sunny
Warm and Overcast
Cold and Sunny
Cold and Overcast
Light Rain
Heavy Rain
Sleet
Snow
What problems have you identified whilst using your camera?
For example: âOn sunny days it is hard to see the viewfinder.â

I haven't identified any problems associated with weather other than battery life decreases during cold weather operations.
In my limited experience with the 10d, there is only one problem I have encountered that I consider annoying. My nose, or some other part of my face, will occasionally bump the 'wheel' on the back of the camera and inadvertantly adjust my exposure compensation. I don't usually realize it until I get home and start looking at exif data and have a string of photos at + or - .5. I think some sort of tension increase in that wheel movement could be a useful update to the camera. I know I can disable the wheel with the switch, but I do use it frequently enough that I don't want to have to turn the switch on and off each time.

Hi Ben
I use my camera 3-6 times per week.
I use it mostly outside
Weather conditions so far have been: Warm and Sunny, Warm and Overcast
I can't say that I've identified any problems yet with my camera. I am still in the learning phase however, but so far - I love it, and I'm very happy with every aspect of it so far. The grip is comfortable, the weight is good, controls are easy. Not sure if this applies, but it's sometimes hard to see all the data in the viewfinder with glasses on.
Edit: I forgot to mention, there is a window that pops up when the camera is connected to the computer and it's about to turn off for power save. The text is in spanish. It was originally in English for a few months and all of a sudden it's now Spanish. The camera itself is set for English - it appears to be a deal with the drivers. I had this same problem on the inital install and when I did a System Restore to completely delete the drivers and start over it worked fine.

As a specs wearer the whole of the viewfinder is hard to see without scanning around (normally I can't see the information displayed at the bottom without adjusting the camera position). Also my glasses tend to get smudges as they are pushed onto my face to minimise light ingress.

3-6 times a week
Outside
Everything but sleet and heavy rain
Problems- in AV mode when I'm trying to set the AF points manually I'm inadvertently setting the exposure levels.
Over all Iâm very happy with the camera.

I use my camera 3-6 times a week (usually)
All weather conditions except sleet
I did have a problem with the original 10D I purchased and it was returned for a new camera. The second one has been much better.
It took a while to get used to the weight.
I have a problem with the focus points sometimes. For a long time the picture review would look absolutely perfect and then I would upload the pic and it would always need tweaking to get it to look like what I saw on the lcd screen. I now adjust the kelvin temperature and what I see is what I get.
All in all I like the camera. |

Problems:
- Speed & responsiveness of review on LCD
- The weight of my camera bag surpasses my luggage on most trips
- Back focus with one lens (50mm f/1.4)
- Sensor dust (easy to clean with right tools tho)
Deeply recessed window on viewfinder is difficult to clean and collects dust
- Position of rear LCD screen invites noseprints
- LCD brightness is good, but at high settings makes exposure look brighter than it is; need to pay strict attention to histogram
- In manual mode, top dial adjusts shutter speed, back dial aperture; in Aperture preferred, the top dial adjusts aperture, shutter preferred the op dial selects shutter again; would prefer the functions stayed on the same dial.
Edited for clarity

1- I have found the auto focus test light to be annoying, and bogs the cameras memory down - so when it can focus - you cant snap a shot.
2- I have found that i dont much like the preset white balance settings, and tend to use mainly custom white balance.
3- I have found the camera does not like to be soaked with a wave, nor does the compact flash card.
4- I have found that it you only have to shut the camera off once while it's writting to the card to ruin a compact flash card, and put unneccesary worry on me about a broken camera.
5- I have found that the image preview - even with the LCD brightness at very low - tends to be much brighter than the image actually is, and using the histogram is important for accurate exposures.

None that are significant. I find the shots always turn out darker than they appear on the LCD, which is a little strange, but nothing that has impacted my photography, as a minor level adjustment in PS corrects everything.
But while I'm here:
sonnyH - how does one adjust the kelvin? I'm not sure I know what you mean, and that sounds like it might be my 'problem'. Perhaps this can't be done on the 300D... |

Come to think of it, I've noticed the same thing. The problem is worse when using a Polarizing filter

Use my 300D 3-6 times weekly, in and outdoors equally, all weather conditions except Snow, Sleet, Heavy Rain.
I use AV (Aperture Priority) a lot, and sometimes the knob slips into Manual on me. |

-I can't remember when a day went by without taking a picture.
-all weather (though I'd likely use the coolpix 5700 if it were really rainy). Predominantly snow/cold since I bought it at the beginning of December, but have used it in warmish weather too. and in rain. actually hail once too.
-problems encountered:
-yesterday at the zoo everytime I'd go into a building the lens would fog up (32/0C outside, 80/28C and humid inside)
-bright LCD fools me into underexposing a lot since my histogram reading skills suck
-I like to shoot .RAW, so only get 30 pics on a 256MB CF card, and I only have four of those.
-I use the 4-shot burst a lot, so 30 pics turns into 7 or 8 different compositions.
-the battery is so good, i never think about charging it, and Murphy makes it die when there's no plug in sight
Apparently my nose isn't as big as Setz's, because I've never had it independently adjust any setting on my camera (although sometimes it makes long distance phone calls without asking).

Sometimes on cold days my breath condenses quite badly on parts of my camera if I'm not careful.
Also when I have been taking studio shots I always end up with lots of settings such as white balance, mirror lockup, exposure compensation etc, that I have to disable or change. I think it would be nice to have an option that takes you back to your 'standard' settings.

Is there something I am missing? :)
I know you can clear 'all custom functions' and 'all camera settings' but what if I want to keep some and not others? |

3-6x wk
mostly outside
cold and sunny, cold and overcast, warm and sunny, warm and overcast, light rain....used it in all of these
problems:
-dust!
-no override to flash that i can find (that is if I want to shoot in macro or portrait mode AND turn off flash can't)
-can't block off a group of photos to delete at one time, have to do one at a time or all at once.
-it's not waterproof (ok maybe not a problem per se but would b a great feature)
-occassionally it will not allow me to 'click to shoot', i.e. the shot is the way I want it to be, but camera says no these conditions not right so cant shoot, I would like to be able to shoot even if camera doesnt agree with me)

I'll look at my manual when i get home but i'm pretty sure this functionality is present in the 10d.

1- shotting in manual mode, AV, TV should allow you to shoot with -w/o the flash...
2- manual mode should fix this problem as well - or just manual focus
it could also be that you are bursting shots, and the buffer memory is full for a couple seconds.

3-6 Times a week
Outside
Warm and Sunny
Warm and Overcast
Cold and Sunny
Cold and Overcast
Light Rain

Problems off the top of my head:
1. Dial used to adjust parameters changes between Av, Tx, and M. Ideally they should always be the same. For example in Av and Tx the main dial controls aperture and shutter speed respectively. In M, aperture is controlled by the quick control dial and shutter speed is controlled by the main dial. For somebody who usually uses Av for shots this causes confusion every time I switch to M.
2. Comes from the factory set to allow shots to be taken without CF card. This is only a minor nuisance.
3. Deep eyepiece collect dust and is difficult to clean.
4. I would rather have a rocker than a combination dial and button to scroll around images in the review.
5. Shutter release is in a poor location for those with large hands.
6. LCD has extremely narrow viewing angle and needs a better anti-reflection coating.
7. Manual focus near pointless due to Canon's choice of focus screen without split prism. No ability to change the screen.
8. Icons for metering modes are not intuitive to the actual function.
9. DOF preview button located poorly for people with adult sized hands.
10. When using the timer the timer light cannot be disabled. There should be a custom function to turn it on and off.
11. Camera puts images into folders on the CF card. I'd prefer a different system that would either put all images into one folder or allow you to start new folders as you change subjects.
12. I'd like a hotshoe cover. |

How often do you use your camera? Once a week / Twice a week / 3-6 times a week / Every day
As much as possible - usually 3-6 times a week.
Where do you mostly use it? Inside / Outside
Mostly indoors, but had a fair share of outdoors too.
If outside, please select the weather condition(s) you have used it in:
Warm and Sunny
Warm and Overcast
Late evening/Night
What problems have you identified whilst using your camera?
- Sometimes the "play" button (used to preview the last shot) doesn't work when I push it immediately after saving to CF.
- Tripod mount doesn't have an additional "locking groove" to prevent the camera from rotating if the screw wasn't tight enough.
- No support for regular TTL mode can sometimes be a pain on Speedlite flashes - I have to resort to the Manual Focus trick in order to get it to expose in "evaluate" mode rather than E-TTL or Manual.

How often do you use your camera? Once a week / Twice a week / 3-6 times a week / Every day
I use my camera every day 3-5 times at least. Sometimes just because I'm sitting on the couch in front of the TV with nothing to do. I will just start snapping away at just about anything and everything.
Where do you mostly use it? Inside / Outside
Depends on the season. In the summer I use it mostly outside. In the winter months I use my camera more inside. About 50 50 I guess.
If outside, please select the weather condition(s) you have used it in:
Warm and Sunny X
Warm and Overcast X
Cold and Sunny X
Cold and Overcast X
Light Rain
Heavy Rain
Sleet
Snow
What problems have you identified whilst using your camera?
For example: âOn sunny days it is hard to see the viewfinder.â
Just that it sometimes helps to increase exposure compensation in sunny weather. Wouldn't think that but because the camera can be fooled by the very sunny (or snowy) conditions increasing this really helps. :-)

This may be my own thick-headedness but I have shot over 45 Gb of photos in the last 6 months and I get more "Use Fill Flash" comments than any 3 people I know. I use a 42" reflector, the best on-camera flash unit I could find (Canon 550EX) and still I don't seem to be able to knock the shadows off someone's face. A slightly better explanation in the manual of the automatic fill-flash usage in Av, Tv or M modes would be beneficial for idiots like me.
The preview button is difficult to press sometimes.
The camera swivels even when mounted to my flash bracket.
That darned "Off" switch for the dial. Who the heck wants to turn off the dial; you kinda need it for some work with the focusing fields.

Problem: When using pre-set modes, the flash sometimes pops up even when I don't want to use it. (not really a biggie)
