Well, it seems like I am still choosing humor over standard shots. The question is, "Am I paying a price?"

My Action shot did not do quite as well as I expected.

I had two shots to choose from (as usual) and went for the one that was different and would, hopefully get a bit of a laugh (as usual). The other one was a more standard shot.

Should I have gone with the train instead of the dinosaur? Or are all my shots the same quality?

The After Dark challenge seems to shoot this theory of humor VS serious down. I went serious and made what I thought was one of my best shots and it is sitting at 5.1.

Most of the time, comments I receive would seem to indicate a higher score than I am getting. Then, after the challenge, you look at the stats and the average vote by commenters is almost always 2-3 points higher than the final average.

While I do appreciate comments from people that like the shots (they're like manna from heaven), the comments that tell me what's wrong are helpful in improving my work.

I guess I am getting better though. My last few shots have been over 5 when I was averaging under 5 before.

Hey! It IS working. Yay!!!!

If you had some blurring so it seem that the dinosaur was active or moving would help give it a more action feeling. The sky on this one is really nice.

The second one with the train in action is very nice, but at the same time you see the SUV which is stopped and not moving. If you took a shot in which the train was moving without the SUV in the shot, it would definitely have worked.

I would have given you dinosaur shot a "7" and maybe a "6" for the train because I like humor shots and it was more original.

I think the train may be a little better picture but the "action", a train passing a grade crossing, is an every day occurance; whereas the dino is unusual. Hard to notice these things in the field but one small point that may have improved the dino shot would have been to obscure the straight line made by the front edge of the slab by kicking some dirt/gravel onto it. Both of these shots may have been more interesting with a lower to the ground point-of-view.

I have thought a lot about this in the past... humor... There are several things you need to take into consideration when you use humor as your theme. Humor is probably as much or more subjective than the image itself. Some of your audience will find it funny and some wont. No matter how much humor you have in your image, it will not override the visual impact of the image. It may enhance it in some way, but it will not make people forget about what they are looking for in challenge photos. If you have a high visual impact image coupled with some humor, I think it would do rather well. If humor is the only impact in your photo, I believe it would just be an average photo.

The train photo has more of a sense of action to it. The dino has more potential though. As Faidoi said if there was a little bit of blur that would have helped quite a bit. Also if you could have swept some of that black rock at the base to cover the cement pads it would have helped too. I can't help but think if you rotated to your left to a 3/4 view so your child was running more toward the camera the view would have been more interesting.

Aside from the challenge though I would more like to look at the Dino photo over the train any day. I love roadside attractions. I just wish the people I travel with felt the same way. Apparently I'm never going to live down the time I stopped at the petrified forest. I was the only one who thought the process of petrification was interesting. Everyone else kept muttering that I made them stop to look at rocks that looked like wood or wood that looked like rocks. Turns out they were expecting full standing trees with leaves and everything made out of rock or something. The cross country road trip later this year is going to be interesting. I wonder how they are going to react to driving 100 miles out of the way to see the worlds largest yarn ball.

Thank you all for your considered responses to my question. They all give me new ways to look at my questions and come up with answers that will, hopefully help me in the future.

This is what I love about this site and I'm glad every day that I found it when I did. You all are what makes this a great place to visit.
