I bought one of these on Friday, tried it yesterday but didn't work. I brought it back to the store and I got a replacement... but still didn't work. It's the kind that has the usb cable attached to it. I have XP and the package says I don't need a driver, but when it didn't work I put the CD in and got the message that my system has a driver support for it.

I'm stumped!... my card is sandisk ultra and i thought for a while that maybe this reader only works with lexar cards. Their website says it works for other cards too!

Could USB version be the problem? I think I remember a thread awhile ago about usb version 2. How do I check what version I have? The package doesn't say anything about usb version though.

Try plugging it into a different USB port on your computer.

you need at least windows 98 second edition as an OS for it to work.

i got one today... and it works fine.

EDIT: the USB interface is backwards compatible in most cases, so that shouldn't be an issue

I have Win XP and I tried both USB ports (I only have 2). I also tried to reboot. Nothing worked but all my other usb hardware worked. I'll try it on my sister's puter.

read the insert, you have to download the drivers, and install them, then plug the USB cable in, then insert the card.

driver link

upon using it a bit a more i find that sometimes the drive doesnt show up once the reader has read the card. this only happens sometimes, and i found unplugging and re plugging it in seems to solve the issue.

over all - i am bit frustrated with the reader. but its a lot faster than the camera when it does work...

i would still try to download the drivers even though it says you don't need to - they are probably more current online than what winXP ships with...

I emailed Lexar and this is their reply

Hello,

The reader you have does not need any drivers for windows XP .

Now please do this.

Plug the reader with the card in it into the USB port and goto My computer and check for removable drive.

If you cannot find the Removable drive,

Goto Device manager and check for the USB device which is marked with an Yellow ? mark under Universal serial Bus controllers

Double click that device and click on drivers tab and click on update drivers.Continue the driver update wizard.Select the recommended option and in the new screen check specify a location option and type the following location c:\windows\inf and click on Next. Now the wizard searchs for the driver file and displays it when it found the correct driver. If the wizard selects usbstor.inf file, click on Next and finish the installation procedure and goto My computer and check for the removable drive.

If the wizard dont select usbstor.inf file and selects another file, please check in that screen you will find a option where the wizards describes that it found another drivers for the Lexar reader. Check that option and click on Next and then select the Microsoft RGB driver which is usbstor.inf and finish the installation and check for the removable drive. Please get back to me with the results.

Best Regards

Vinay

LexarMedia Technical Support

I will try it when I get home later. I tried it on a friend's laptop and it worked... he has Windows 2000 Prof

I tried the suggestion from Lexar tech support but it still didn't work.

So i went and bought a Scandisk ImageMate USB2.0 Reader/Writer. Guess what. It didn't work either but worked on my friend's laptop. I also tried rebooting with the reader plugged in to the usb port and removed the camera and scanner so that only one usb has a hardware attached to it just in case of a conflict. Didn't work. My computer just doesn't see it. Am really clueless and getting really frustrated. :(

Well a simple test might help. Do any USB peripherals work on your USB? Is it a laptop or a desktop? If it's a laptop, you might be better off getting a CF PCCard reader. They are about $10 and sit nicely in your laptop, no cables or external devices. Actually, my Lexar USB reader came with one, as it has a PCCard slot that uses the adapter for compact flash and a smartmedia slot. (Since the CF card is basically a small PCCard, all the PCCard adapter does is adapt the connectors.

Did you Lexar card reader come with a card? Is it the Jump shot card reader?? If so it will only work with other Lexar cards. Lexar has been packaging these free card readers with some of their cards, but they will only work with other Lexar cards.

Don't know if you are talking to me or to Bruchen, but my Lexar PCCard reader which came free with my USB reader works fine with all our CF cards (1 256MB Lexar, 1 256MB Viking, and my son's 256MB SanDisk).

Mine's a Model GS-UFD-20SA-TP. Not a jump shot. Are you talking about the USB enabled CF cards which can connect via a special cable? Yes, I just confirmed via web that's what they call jump shot. But of course, since Bruchen returned his and bought another brand, that one cannot be a jump shot! Must be a USB configuration or hardware problem, IMHO.

Neil: my usb ports and peripherals work, I know for sure... I have a desktop.

It's mind-boggling that both of them (lexar and skandisk) don't work on my desktop but do on a laptop. I'm thinking it's a usb configuration problem since all hardware work nicely. But what the problem is I don't know.

Shelley: It didn't come with a card. Here's a link/photo
I thought that at first that it was probably because my card is Skandisk that there maybe a compatibility issue, but it's supposed to read most if not all CF cards type I/II.

There may actually be some software compatability issue on that computer. There may be some other software that is conflicting that is on your desktop, but not on your laptop. Ain't computers grand!! Can't live without em, can't control them either

I had a similar problem that involved both my USB and Firewire reader. The difference in my case was:

1) The boot for the system when the device was plugged in took 2 or 3 mins longer than it should.

2) Sometimes plugging in the reader hung the entire system.

Only did this with card readers, which included my printer as it has a reader built in and was seen as a reader by the PC.

Turned out to be a lesser known problem with XP where if it gets itselkf in a tangle and has a problem the first time it tries to install a new USB device it can mess up the whole USB thing to a point where it can't recover ..... only solution was a reinstallation of XP from scratch.

Hopefuloly your symptoms are not the same as I have listed here as well.

not all USB ports are the same and even though newer USB devices are supposed to be backward compatible with the older 1.1 slow speed ports, this isn't always true either.

I have a new usb 2.0 high speed card reader that will only work on 4 of my USB ports - it fails to connect correctly, even at low speed on two other ports.
