I have a proposition for y'all. I propose that a once a month free study challege be posted (and yes for us lowly 'registered users' too), in which the rule about taking the photo while the challenge is in the submission stage, is lifted. One could submit the photos that are oldies but goodies, ones that haven't seen the light of day, the ones that come out great, but don't fit any challenge that is in the submission phase.
Thoughts? Comments? Constructive criticism? New ideas? I wanna hear it all.

Cheers,
Drew

Here's my comment: I'm going to bed.

Could be interesting.

C'mon! I know you people on the west coast are awake! Leave one! I'm (if you couldn't tell) serious about this!

Free study is good because we get to see original or varied types of compositions, but it seems like not too many took advantage of it.

One good thing about your idea is that we should see some really good photos and not too many last second shots, like the ones I usually submit :P

At the same time it's too easy for some people. I don't know the average shots that people take a month. I could fill up a cd a week of pictures that I like taking.

Where's the challenge without the date thing? Most other sites don't require certain dates. That's what make DPChallenge so different.

This site is about deadlines and I would not want to change that for any of the challenges. However, I really did enjoy the month long free study and would like to have those each month. This gives me an idea that could be fun but could be a little difficult to implement. It could be called something like "Now and Then" and it would involve re-shooting a scene from any previous photograph and improving on it for a new and improved photo. At the very least it could be fun to do in the forums for anyone interested. I love going through old photos and either re-editing them to improve them or as reminders of what I would like to re-shoot.

agree fully with tim.

if you lifted deadlines on an open challenge, think of the amount of entries to have to sift through to vote... kind of scares me.

I really like the idea of 'reshooting a old subject'.

There are plenty of other sites that do this. DPC is about new creations. It's its uniqueness and I wouldn't change it for the world!!!!! :-)

I don't think it's a bad idea. I know I have some great shots that I shot even last month. I think it would be fun.... and maybe bring some people "out of the woodwork". I don't think it should be an all the time thing, but once in awhile, give it a try. I know right now, I have hit a slump and I am having a problem getting the creative juices flowing! I think it's lack of things to shoot... no snow, no leaves, nothing... just my kids, me and the objects in my home. And all that gets a bit boring after sometime.

I do like that DPC makes you think.... that is why I joined... but looking back at all my stuff, some of the best is older. :)

I fully agree with you: DPC lives from the creativity of pictures that would have never been taken without a given challenge topic.

I do like the currently running free study, but while going through them for voting, I realized that probably most submiters didn't work specially for this challenge, but rather looked through their files and took what looked best for them (including myself). So even the once I liked most are just nice but not inspiring or with an extraordinary amount of creativity.

So I would go for having free study once in a while as it is now and not on a regular basis.

Quite agree. I see DPC as about taking photos.
