Ok I just clicked the 5000th picture with my D90.
Challenge: I seek your help in PPing it.. bring out the subject the best that you can!
Mode: Aperture Priority
Speed: 1/1250 sec.
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 400
Metering: Matrix
The goals of this challenge:
- Learn better post processing techniques (e.g. how to bring back details from the highlights)
- Get tips on how to better frame/prepare this shot in future (e.g. shooting mode, ISO/aperture/etc.),
and
- Honor the best Post Processor in this thread (me being the judge, LOL)
Rules:
Ruleset: Advanced editing.
Time limit: Submit by 8:00 PM Pacific Time U.S. on Sunday March 15, 2009.
Image: Please use the higher resolution version from here.
Please post the PPing details if you do attempt.
Help me choose the winner then? :-)
ETA: Time limit was relaxed.

Taking you up on it. Let me see how badly I can butcher it. |

Do you want us to work on the Portfilio-sized image or a full-resolution one? I just grabbed the one from your Portfolio page.
Also, do you want us to follow a DPC rule set, or take an "anythng goes" approach?

I am expecting an advanced ruleset. The goal is for me to learn how to best PP it. I uploaded the modified full-size version (max 1024 pixels) the one that you can access from the photo page. That would be good.:-)
Thanks.

Ok, quick tweak of levels.
Duplicate layer shadow/highlight to recover some of the highlight detail.
Dodge and repair eyes
Blur background
Crop
Darken edges
Litle saturation boost
High pass filter
Bother - didn't know you had a high res version - well this is from the low res, you'll have to imagine how much better it would have been with the bigger file ;)

Portrait of a Seagull
Masked the background
Selective color on greys to make it red
Dodged left side of birdy face on the Midtone "range"
Burned all over birdy on the Shadow "range"
Selected background again and did a Gaussian blur to get rid of grain
Smart Sharpen
Added Vignette via Lens correction filter
...and I used the low res, sigh.

quick edit, just levels, curves, some dodge and burn to make it "pop" a little more. Nothing drastic.

Detailed editing steps in photo notes. I did a lot of selective editing to get the noise under control.

Wow! I am amazed!!
There is still time. The deadline is 5 PM Pacific U.S. Time, so you still have about 2 hours 16 minutes. |
