The commenting challenge for the 1000th challenge seems to be a hit! I'd like to propose something similar for regular challenges. If at least 15 people would give comments on the first 10% of the challenge entries they see in the random order provided, everyone would get at least 1 comment (assuming the random order thingie is truly random). That way we wouldn't have anyone with the dreaded "No Comments Received During the Challenge" honor. And 10% of a normal sized challenge is very do-able - on average that would be about 20-30 comments or so.

I don't know if this should be a formal side challenge thing with a pool of "team members" who would sign up by challenge, or just something to encourage. Ideas?

Sounds like a challenge to me. Maybe every challenge for a month, free study, or even year.

I really think you're on to something really good here. The '1000th Challenge Commenting Challenge' has made me remember how rewarding commenting can be. Especially as it means my entry also benifits with comments from other members who are also commenting.

I would be super keen to be the first (or would that be the second member?) of the 'Commenting Team'. :)

if pictures truly come up randomly it's still possible for some not to get comments by not appearing in the 15 commenter's first 10%.

nice idea though. it's a real bummer not to get even one comment.

Perhaps have a "commenting club"? I agree that if enough people would commit, it would work. Unfortunately, many folks don't normally comment on the shots that don't appeal to them various reasons, including:

-I am not nearly as good a photographer as others and I don't feel qualified to evaluate others entries.

-If I can't say anything nice, then I should not say anything

-I dislike getting the nasty PM's when I leave a critique someone does not like.

-You already wasted 3 seconds of my time with this rubbish. No point on wasting my time to tell you what you should already know.

I would be happy to commit to the first 10% if I know others are doing the same. That would actually be less commenting for myself and a few others!

While I can't say that I'd be able to do it for every challenge, I would certainly be willing to try.

You mean like this one? Critique Club

hehe

Now, I know that the premise is a little bit different, but your post just reminded me of it.

I am already commenting on every photo that vote on. This is something i have just started doing. My thought on this is if I'm going to vote/comment I might as well comment/vote.

My current policy is to usually vote on only the 20% or so that I have to in order for my votes to count. I make effort to comment more on the 4's and 5's. If it is a big challenge and I have to skip, it is usually the 6+votes. Seems to work out. The higher my average vote, the less comments I have left.

What IS this already existing "critique club"? I've never dared checking that box on my entries...

Hmm, what about an "open to critique" indicator where people can choose between
1 - Bring it on, negative critique helps me be a better photographer!
2 - I'd like some critique, but please be gentle. Thanks!
3 - Don't you dare hurting my ego. If you do, I will hunt you down by PMs and flood your own shitty photos with troll comments.
4 - I know this sucks, don't bother commenting. I'm in a marathon and had to submit *something* / am running for the brown.

It's been suggested many times before. I would love to see it.

Funny, I actually got hit by someone doing a 3!

The critique club is a group of volunteers who offer more in depth critique on challenge entries. When someone checks the box during a challenge stating they want a critique, it goes into a queue. The volunteers in the group are given one of these images to critique (randomly generated, so you can't pick and choose which image you critique). Sadly, of late, there have not been that many critiques done, it all depends on the time people have to do it. It is quite time consuming. There are many members in the critique club, some more active than others.

I think this is still a good side challenge idea. I'm up to it.
Any one esle?

Another twist may be to leave a comment for all photos you give a 5. The really good and really bad ones seem to get quite a few comments.

I'd be up for it, but only if I get a cool little logo to post on my profile! :)
