Alright! Been trying to get Gallery set up on 1and1.com. Figured out the SSH and all. Uploading pics now and they will not show...AT ALL!! Tryed everything I can think of. At my wits end. Yelling at the computer. I need a beer.
Any ideas?

Without knowing what errors you are getting other than the pics wont show I cant really say for sure. Have you gone to the gallery forum and searched for a similar problem? Their forum is very helpful. If not, try and explain exactly what the problem is or post a link to the site. I've not used 1and1 but I've set up gallery numerous times, so may be able to help.

did you run the gallery config wizard ?

Did you read the install instructions ? :)

It was pretty straightforward when I tried it on 1and1, I just did it step by step for the install instructions in the documentation - though it isn't immediately obvious.

Photos upload, but just give me a broken link. Been to the forum, try the instructions. Unable to get back to my configuration (config.php) page to redo things. Get a damn, not found error. Type in the whole url manually and cont. with not there error. Arrrggh!
Gordon, cannot get back to the COnfiguration wizard. Went step by step, also.

You need to do the steps you did in the beginning to get back to the config wizard - ie chmod all the files and run the page again. It sounds like it could be your links to the album directory. I would highly recommend you get to the config page again and make sure that you are typing in the correct location of the album you created from the root path - www/public_html/html/album - or whatever you had.

Well, I'd suggest a Corona.
Less filling, tastes great.

I see that you have installed everything in your main directory (this is ok, but its going to be confusing in the future). I suggest creating folders "albums", "Gallery" and "tmp" and run configuration again making sure you specify the correct paths. Use FTP to chmod if you don't putty and once you can upload, I highly recommend Gallery remote to upload multiple pictures.

man I sure hope this thing you are doing is free, I would be pretty mad if I had to pay for those kind of problems....

I'm dealing with 1and1 as well - because it is free. While I'm having trouble with my site stuff - as you say, their pages take forever to load - I'm hoping it's just because of the promotion. My FTP's go through very quickly and are always up before they say they will be (almost instantly). Maybe once the free promo is up in a couple weeks their site will be a little quicker to work with too.

I'm also using 1 and 1 with Gallery. Had some troubles at first, but turns out things just took more time than I expected. Is this a new setup? This week? I just checked my site and things are loading very fast. Are you on dial up or DSL, etc.? Once I got things going, this FREE space and Gallery have been working very well.

As for your problems, make sure you chmod all the folders as indicated in order to run the setup. Don't forget to chmod them back to the locked setting after you're finished. How did you upload the images? Did you use the add new images from the admin login or are you trying to point to a specific folder on your web space? Did you change the name of the directories?

I hope you get things workled out soon. I KNOW it can be very frustrating when things SHOULD work but don't.

Just checked and my site is still really fast from 1and1 - I guess it depends on your connection to a large extent.

Gallery et al (PHPNuke and so on) all set up pretty easily too - I just followed the instructions - sounds like your config is screwed up - the documentation goes on at length about making sure that is right or you wont be able to access your pictures.

If you have DSL or some other kind of permanent Internet connection you could just install apache and PHP on your computer at home. It's free.

Did you use your own codes for this page or did you use one of their pages? I have been trying to set up something like yours and can't figure out how to do it.

The ISP will not care as long as you don't attract a ton of traffic. DNS is not a problem with a dynamic DNS service, which is also free. For example: //www.dyndns.org

I am on a cable line. I went through and followed the exact instructions...again. Using Terminal in Mac OS X, because (as I have already written them), they offer no Mac software solutions or suggestions. COnnecting through SSH on Terminal for chmod, etc. Did it all step by step. The site comes up, but still get the broken pic links and now have error 404 for the ONE album folder. Haven't had the time and have to go to work, but will just start completely over. Seems the logical thing to me

I tried 1and1's control panel and its really fast now.

Try Gallery Remote.

Depends on your contract I guess - they throw people off for running servers around here, and actively scan for them on certain contracts.
