Can we do this challenge again some time? Now I am finding images I would have preferred to enter instead LOL |
You have a 6.3+ score. Why in this universe would you want a re-run? ;-) |

At first I didn't agree with the first few people that stated what they didn't like about my image - I thought it looked great on my monitor. But after the 5th person made the same comment, I finally went back and played with the photo again. And they were all correct on their assessment, although I do think that it shows up quite differently on some monitors. I liked the photo before, but I like it better now that I've made some changes to it. So while I am disappointed in my score, I do appreciate the honest feedback. |
I don't know if I commented on yours yet, but thanks for saying this. There have been so many upset people about comments, I have seriously considered going back and erasing my comments. I am not the best person to comment on pictures, but sometimes I feel that I do have constructive comments. I am learning a lot here and want others to learn too. However, it seems that every time I comment on photos that garner lower scores from me, someone complains about my comment. I try to be very nice and respectful, noticing what I like about it, but still I feel that I have offended them (as shown by their response). The scores reflected that I was not the only one who saw it, just one of the few who said anything.
So, now I agonize over every comment to see if it can be taken wrong. It probably takes me 2-3 times longer to leave a comment since I am constantly re-wording it. Anyway, thanks for showing how a comment can assist a photographer to get better. I know that every single comment I have received is teaching me something, especially those with critique and direction in them. I love them, but see why so few people leave them anymore.
I cherish every comment I receive. As you can tell by my score, I really need it (yes, the picture deserves this score :-)

You've hit the nail on the head why we'll never, ever see people giving more comments on lower votes even though there is this grass-roots movement to force people to do so.
If I have any advice for you, it is to ignore the complainers completely. If you read a PM and it is in any way negative about your comment, simply delete it and move on. If it becomes too much, there is always the 'baghead' option, and you can hide your identity during voting for any commenting you do.
Keep on keeping on, and don't let the whiners get to you. |

Very slowly inching up toward a 5.5. That probably means I will get hit with some 1's and 2's very soon.

I wonder if we can encourage some of this commenting effort to stick around after this uber-challenge is over? |

I know what you mean there. I had a situation last week. I created what I thought was a great image, that had a black background. I got a second opinion on the photo from a couple people, and they did not have a calibrated monitor. What on my screen was a nice black background, had a purple streak on one section on their monitors which were not calibrated and a bit too bright. So I had to fix an issue with a photo that I could not even see! After all that and re-submitting it, it still just barely got over the 5 mark, so it was not worth the extra effort.
However the point is that your image will look different to some people, so cover all your bases. (even when your monitor is calibrated like mine is, I know that some people would have a brighter monitor and they would see the problem) |

This is definitely the most comments I have received during voting. at 50 comments now. I need to go back and comment on the pics in the challenge, I want to comment more than I receive. |

I edit on an increased gamma color profile for JUST this reason! It allows me to make sure that any editing I do (especially spot editing), will not show up on brighter monitors. One of the most common things I see are people that edit on monitors that are too dark submitting images that show all kinds of editing (like big dark brush strokes in backgrounds) issues on a calibrated or near-to-calibrated monitor. It can really damage a photo. |

I agree. However I keep asking the question (into the wilderness of DPC, where it simply echoes around and never gets heard) as to why everyone is not a baghead during the voting stage? You are not supposed to contact the commentor and bitch or even ask a question about the photo because it may effect your vote. The photo is supposed to stand on it's own. So then why even make it possible for this to happen? There is no upside to having identities available during the voting stage. The photos are presented without names, the votes are given without names, the comments should be too. (until after the challenge voting is over of course) |

Please don't. As long as you are stating your honest opinion, then no one has any cause for complaint -- if they don't like the comment, it's their problem, not yours. Also, those comments are not just for the photographer, but for the rest of us to learn from as well.
In fact, any response during the voting period which attempts to influence your opinion or is abusive is a violation of the rules -- you can report the PM in a ticket to the SC (under the Help > Contact Us menu) if you wish.

Pretty incredible-- 53 comments! Thanks!
I think this breaks my personal best for comments received during a challenge. My former best was in voting during the challenge that was only open to those who had given more comments than they received.
I'm almost to 100 given... |

Still a lot of likers and dislikers of mine. A lot of comments critiquing aspects about my entry that are truly the way the scene was. I like getting all the input and not just unexplained low and midrange votes. It gives a lot of insight into some of what normally happens in other challenges.
Please people, keep up the commenting after this one is over.

Man, do I feel like an A$$!!!
Please disregard the whining i did earlier in this thread.
I am not usually a whiner.
I DO appreciate EVERY SINGLE COMMENT I have gotten- good or bad.
It is amazing to have almost 30 comments and the challenge is barely half over!
But on DPC, we all dream of getting great scores, positive comments, and ribbons, of course! So it is natural for us (or ME) to feel slightly disappointed when we get comments that mean everyone doesn't LOVE the picture. But this is why we are here - to learn, and to get opinions on our photos that will help us improve!
Ok, have I redeemed myself from my earlier whining yet? :)

You can stay under the low scoring rock with the rest of us. But you have to bring the pizza and beer next time. |
