I don't know if I'm going to get a chance to shoot anymore on the Hope challenge. I tried a couple of shots, and I really like the idea, but I think it's getting in the way of looking critically at the shots.
This is the question:
Are any of these shots worth entering if I want to maintain my current average? At this point, I'm getting mid 5's on everything. I had one challenge at 4.9, but that was an unusual shot that I was willing to take a chance on. These shots have grown on me quite a bit--and I like them a lot now, but I'm afraid my initial reaction of, "eh, not so great" is closer to the truth and that I'm too close to the shots.
Anyone willing to look and give me a dose of reality? |

Wendy - I'm still learning and have a long way to go. I would do a happy dance to average in the mid 5's. I would be more than happy to look at your photos if you don't mind a newbie's opinion. |

I have long stopped worrying about personal averages. I enter a challenge if I like a picture and it fits the description. So my opinion: enter a picture if you like it a lot. Dont worry about the scores. The goal (according to me) must be to learn photography and have fun with it rather than counting ribbons in the showcase. If the ribbons come anyways, why not? :-) |

It seems to me, Wendy, that the "dose of reality" you need is not the one you're asking for. DPC is *not* "reality" in a way, shape, or form, and if you're judging your work by whether or not it will enhance your average in DPC then you are short-changing your own development as a photographer, because that's a reactive stance. Better that you strike out and explore new territory, being the one to lead us there as it were. The hell with scores and averages!
FWIW, your average vote received his more than a 1oth higher than mine :-)

I agree with Prash, I think it is better to enter a shot you like, without stressing how others will vote. My best scores have come from shots I took for me that just happened to fit a challenge. |

I understand you perfectly--and agree wholeheartedly. The reason I'm asking about this one, is that I think I'm too close to the idea. I absolutely love the idea of the shot, and it is actually clouding my reaction to it. The shot just seemed so-so when I first looked at it. Now I'm liking it, but I think that I'm too close to the idea. I think I'm talking myself into liking it. At this point, I'm really not sure if there's something there or not. That's why I was looking for a second opinion.
(on other shots, I just have a hard time deciding between them. This time I just don't know about the shot.)
edited to add: hey bear, it's easy to have a higher average when I haven't had as many challenges. Wait a bit, I'm sure it will change!

Replied to you pm Wendy.
I agree to the other posts here that you should do what you find interesting, but if I am submitting to a challenge with some audience, I would like to score better and appeal to these particular audience.
I replied with points that I think would make your picture score better.. is it 'really better'? I don't know :)
have fun! |

Sometimes I enter a shot just because I love it, and want 200 people to see it. It's better when they love it too, but sometimes it's enough to just show it off. :) |

I was just looking at your portfolio. By all means, keep shooting and entering.
Decide for each challenge whether you are entering for the score, to learn something, or just to show a photo you like. You can do one or all. Don't enter just to enter though.
Other than that, have fun. |

Excellent advice! I think doing that has caused some of my low scores. |

You pegged it--there's a lot of wanting to have something entered, but there is a little bit of "hey, I did something different with photoshop that I hadn't done before". Of course it's nothing wonderful since I'm just getting things figured out, but for me it's different and kinda fun. Unfortunately, I think mostly it's that I want to have something entered. Oh well, we'll see what happens. |

Getting feedback is what makes this site in particular and the internet in general so awesome. Submit every shot that you want to learn from, that you want people to respond to. I often submit shots I know will tank just to see what people say about them. At the end of the day I take my score, my placement, and my comments and learn a little something about what people like, what they don't like. Don't let your average score impede your potential to learn. |
