I was wondering what people thought of my entry. I asked several of my friends for their thoughts on it and I'd say only about 3/4 of them interpreted it the way I saw it. This is a critique request.

You were carving the old style lightbulbs into the new style. I don't know how you couldn't get that, it was pretty obvious to me, although I see by the comments at least one person didn't get it. I thought it was creative.

The name of the challenge was "Light on white". Perhaps it would have scored better if the hands had white gloves on them to help the photo meet the challenge.

I "got it" immediately, and thought it was quite creative. I didn't feel drawn into the photo though. I think it needed a little more direction to lead the eye through the shot... my eyes tend to go back to the blank white background rather than the hands or bulbs.

It's a little unbalanced to me, but that's just a nit-pick.

If I had to guess on why the voters kept it down where it is, I'd have to say it's because the hands/knife combo darkens the image more than what most voters had pre-determined what it was they wanted to see.

I didn't vote on this challenge but the lighting isn't that dramatic in this image. Very easy for the voter to click on 5 and move on with little thought.

What's weird about that (and I agree that probably happened) is 2 of the 3 ribboners don't have a white background! In both the 2nd and 3rd place images, the BG is gray and the subject is white.

Sigh...

Some might have not liked the hands, didn't make much of a difference to me--because the white on white was there in the picture. I gave it a 6, because I thought the idea was creative, but to be honest, I didn't find the picture all that interesting--nothing that would draw me back to it in the future.

I think this image, or maybe one very nearly like it, would do well in an editorial piece on "going green" somewhere. You might consider submitting it to some publications. I think it becomes dominated by the hands/knife, and they are very centered and cut off at the bottom. A slightly wider view, and perhaps some green rubber gloves, would suit the message. In a shot like this, I think the eye will be drawn to the dominating color present, so it needs to be "right".

As for the challenge, I thought of it as an okay image, somewhat unusual (a good thing), and an interesting concept executed fairly well. It is the sort of shot that one "gets" right away, and doesn't feel a need to linger over. It also is more of a clever-gimmick shot, as opposed to a visually stunning or beautiful image, so that could have hurt the score as well. If this had been an Editorial challenge, I think it might have scored higher. It's true that some might have voted down the hands because they were not white, but that was not a factor for me.

Thank you all for your feedback. It was very helpful. And thanks for the suggestions chromeydome, I might re-shoot this.
