I took a drive into Eagle River today. I saw the most amazing gathering - over 30 eagles all together. Some in the trees, some in the air, and occasionally one would swoop down to the ground to snag a piece of salmon the firefighters had thrown out into the parking lot. The eagles swarmed and swooped over it like pigeons at the beach.
Attached are some of the photos I took of them. They were too scattered about in the trees, both right by me and across the road to be able to show you their numbers. I just focused on the ones flying around me.

Nice shots Linda. We get gatherings this time of the year also but there are always lots of immature eagles mixed in. Looks like you had mostly mature eagles, likley nesting pairs and females who stay closer to their nesting grounds. Either way they are always fun to shoot on a clear cold day! |

BTW - Something I learned was that boosting the ISO to get really high shutter speeds (over 1/1000) and setting a smaller apperture (normally F7.1 or F8) really helped me get better sharpness in my shots. I was always afraid to do that with my D200 but now with my D300 I shoot at ISO 400 and F8 even on bright days and sometimes as high as 800. My shots have gotten progressivly sharper. Your are good but I think if you try it you'll really like the difference it will give you, especially with the 70-200 F4 you are shooting.
Have fun! |

Thanks for the comments everyone. I had a great time watching all these eagles. The folks in the town told me that the firefighters feed throw out salmon for them from time to time during the winter, and thus the large congregation of them. During the summer you would never see this many gathered.

We have a lot right now at Goldstream, cleaning up after the salmon run, but they're all out in the estuary which is blocked off to the public. No way to get nice close shots like this :( Great pics, Linda! (coming back for a closer look this aft, I promise) |
