| Just curious, what do you think about buying used lenses? Reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about the 14-24mm f/2.8 and/or the 70-200mm f/2.8 for my next purchase, but why should buy new ones, or why should I buy used ones? |

depends on who you're buying from. In Minnesota, National Camera Exchange sells lenses, and I trust that they ensure it works properly before selling. If it's on ebay from someone who has no record of sales, never!
If it's an independent person, I'd be curious why they're selling an L series lens. If there's a better lens that they're moving up to, or just liquidating all their camera equipment, that's one thing. If they're selling a top of the line lens, and still staying in photography, would could possibly replace it? |

Well that was an interesting thought that never occured to me, thanks! It doesn't make sense why anyone would sell lenses like that, but I remember seeing someone selling a 70-200mm a while ago, so that probably just stuck with me. Thanks! |

| I've bought some used lenses from local shops, but nothing terribly expensive. $225 for my Tamron 28-300. |

I've purchased my Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM off of eBay. The trick to that is just the same as any when shopping on eBay... I tend to gravitate towards the one person dealers who are usually college students who need money or the like. The auctions usually sell for a low price and they're usually pleasant people to communicate with.
Anyway, the lens came exactly as described... but I found that it front focuses sometimes (can it be sometimes? I haven't really looked into it). Sooo, I'm looking to send it in for a tune-up when I get the time... no idea how much that usually costs though, plus shipping.
But I'd definitely say that, if you're a careful shopper, buying used lenses could save you a ton of money. Just look at how much stuff is sold between users here at DPC. |

| National's prices really aren't great. In fact, that's the case for most local stores. I'd look on Craigslist, Adorama, BH, KEH, etc for the best deal. |

Thank you so much for the recommendation for Adorama - but if you ever have a query or concern regarding an order from Adorama Camera - or AdoramaPix - please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

I'd like to know why you think the OP, who is a Nikon shooter, is buying an L series lens :)
As for the OP....just go for it. Second hand lens prices don't change much and you can always resell if you decide it's not something you want to keep. Think of it sorta like free lens rental for the time you have it.

It could be that the seller is just getting rid of something that doesn't get any use.

I was just using it as an example. Obviously the whole world should be canon! :) |
