Fred. All of my house plants are named Fred. It saves confusion when I'm talking to them. ;)

and for that EXACT reason, it's a bad idea to name all computers on a network the same name :-) I ended going for Hal - oldie but has that obscure double meaning in a way... No doubt it will lock me out at some point.

Thanx for the guesses guys... I wrote a few of these down for later use.

I'm thinking it's probably a killer system with lots of overclocking potential. But on the downside Vista??
Until u correct the OS, the only thing that comes to mind is "Potential Interupted" :)

But if you downgrade the OS to something stable like XP, u could rename it "VIAGRAAAAH" heheheh :)

At the risk of sounding anachronistic... how about HAL ?

H A L , Oh, somebody just said that : )

Name it the "Anti-Christ" after a famous Land Rover.

So, do you remember what the acronym stands for, and who voiced "him" in the movie?

To be honest... I am not hating this Vista thing so far... apart from a couple of stupid changes (network drives not been mapped to drive letters)..... Not to mention the machine failed DOA and I had to reseat ALL the memory cards to get it to boot  I have a few thousand (well few dozen maybe) more installs to run yet though....

Now - For extra credit ** no google - step sway from that search ** Can anyone think of what company H.A.L. might be referring to (hint: the answer could be blue).

Its initials are the same as my son's -- we thought it was funny since we had a houseful of Macs ...

You could optimistically invoke the power of Douglas Adams and call it 42 ... ;-)

That actually seems quite applicable to me, as Puck has a very "all-seeing-eye" connotation in my industry. It is the Internet names "clearing house" database, as well as the lowest level NOC listing/contact database that exists.

Quite fitting, actually... as Vista-64 with CS4-64 & LR-64 seem to absolutely rock to me. Not sure what others are running into... but I haven't rebooted mine since I installed the thing, and it's lightning quick.

Ahh, memories aren't what they used to be, so I had to reseat my DIMMS.

Vista is not that bad once you tell it to shut up about that "do you really want to do that" line of questioning it takes with you.
How about calling it "Mac?"

"Ah so you have a Mac?"
"No, it is a PC."
"A PC? I thought you called it Mac?"
"Yes, it is Mac."
"Are you ashamed to just call it PC?"
"No, that is it's name. It is Mac."
"I thought you were getting a PC."
"It is for photography. It has Vista on it."
"Vista, eh? I don't really like landscape photography that much. Does it come with any other kinds of pictures on it?"

Sorry, I was just watching some Monty Python.

The only inanimated things I named were my cars: Clarabella (female), Ludovico (male) and Guendalina, shortnamed Wendy (female).
I think you should first understand if your computer is a she or a he :)

haha that was my ex's nickname, such a source of humor.

Xavier Herberticus?

I name everything of mine...alphabetically. Cellphone is Albert, 2GB USB is Bertha, computer is Claire (with external drive Clarence and partition Clarence Jr.), camera is Don Quixote, 512 MB USB is Eugene, kit lens is Frederick....I don't remember what's named Gertrude, but something is...tripod's name is Hubert. And that's as far as I've gotten.

what name did you give your OCD disorder? ;)

ACTUALLY! I didn't realize I was doing this alphabetical thing until I got to Hubert and then I was like "waaaaaaaait...." and I completely forgot that my computer's name was Claire when I named my external...heh. Either I fail really badly or succeed really excellently, depending on how you look at it...

surprised that this hasn't been answered yet..h+1 = I; a+1 = B; l+1 = M...

and I've been using 64 bit Vista for a few months now and haven't had a single crash or any other significant problems. Accessing drives across my wireless network has been a bit of a challenge, but I'm sure that's user error and I haven't looked into it very far yet.

I answered it by inference before -- Isaac's initials are IBM. My question, what HAL stands for (besides the above code), still is pending ...

Sorry missed the hal question... It's something like Heuristic Algorithm..... but I prefer the conspiracy theory on I.B.M.

HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer)
All the answers are at the link I provided above (including the last words on the IBM conspiracy).

Too bad I'm late to the HAL question, because I knew that one. One reason I hear they did that, is that IBM would not let them use their brand name in the movie, as some other companies did, so that was part of why they did the letter shift.

Here's another interesting anecdote about a computer name, regarding Carl Sagan suing Apple:

In 1993 one of the project managers of a personal computer decided to use âCarl Saganâ for the internal name of the project. The name would not be released to the public and was thought to be a token of respect, but when Carl found out about it, he sued, complaining that it was, âan illegal usurption of his name for commercial purposesâ and demanded it be changed.

The project manager did as he was asked, changing the code name to BHA (Butt-Head Astronomer). When Sagan learned of the name change, he filed suit again for libel, infliction of emotional distress and several other butt-headed things.

The verdict: Apple won.

In her ruling, the judge eloquently explained that âone does not seriously attack the expertise of a scientist using the undefined phrase âbutt-headâ.â

As fate would have it I have two big boxes sitting at my feet right now that arrived yesterday and several other boxes that arrived over the last several days which, by the end of today, will have their contents assembled and transformed into a new desktop PC.

Just so happens that my son and I will be putting this two-headed behemoth together tonight (Two wide screen monitors). It's a bonding thing!

I had not thought about naming mine until you brought up the subject. Perhaps I should call it "Medusa". And perhaps I might rename my notebook computer for fleet footed "Hermes" because it will be traveling with me when out on photo safaris.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Btw, I went with Vista 64-bit and a duo-core processor on purpose since both Lightroom II and Photoshop CS4 (and other software products I use) takes full advantage of both technologies. It runs like a well tuned engine once you turn off Vista Aero and make a few configuration changes. After that it is supposedly faster than Windows XP 64-bit.

Who needs silly iconic doodads that just eat CPU cycles and degrade machine performance?

With two heads (so far), perhaps "Hydra" would be fitting ... ;-)

The company I work for is completely on Vista 64. We all bitched and moaned at first, but it runs like a dream. Same thing, they stripped out the bells and whistles. Our IT guy set up two identical computers one with XP and one with Vista 64. Everything works faster on the new Vista machines. (And I am not a plant from Microsoft- if I were it would say 5DmkII under my name).
