i have had this come up after each time i took a pic
says to turn off/on or replace the battery
have done all those and also checked with all lenses and cleaned the contacts with an eraser
the shutter was making a strange noise and seemed to delay returning so i gather the issue is with that?
luckily its still under warranty but i have to send it back to hong kong
looks like its back to the Oly 5060 for a while grrrrrrrrrr
is this a common occurance with the canon 40D? |

You might consider reading this Error 99 and see if that fixes your problems.
I had the same experience a while back and found that using contact cleaner eradicated the problem.
Good luck to you.

I got an error 99 within 5 hours of buying the 40D. I took it as a sign and promptly returned it for a 5D (which was what I wanted in the first place). :-) |

I might be remembering this wrong, so take it with a grain of salt. I believe I had this error when I had my rebel (2 cameras ago), and was told to take out the battery and put it back in. That didn't do much, so I took out the internal backup battery found in the body itself (not the regular lithium ion battery that resides in the grip and powers the main operations of the camera, but the button-sized battery that retains the cameraâs parameter settings. It's worth a try... (don't forget to reset your date!) |

I got it when it was really really cold outside, I think it had something to do with my battery

wouldnt be the weather as its a balmy 30C here lately
i had another look but couldnt find where the internal battery is located
its probably safer to just send it back than muck about with it

Mine did that when it was new, I'd just pull the battery in and out and it would work. Hasn't happened after the first few weeks, I think it was cold too. It's been fine since. This is probably of no real use to you though. |

1. Had a 99 with a 10D when an EF 100-400mm was mounted. Sent in the lens to Canon for IS repair. Issue resolved.
2. Had a 99 with a seondary (back-up) 10D, regardless of which lens was mounted. Canon replaced the shutter.
3. Had another 99 with a 1Dmk2 (not mine) and an EF 100-400mm, again. IS repair, again.
It is my understanding that 99 is a moniker for a general communication error, vague enough to be be of any use when attempting to diagnose the problem.
Given the history above, you should definitely try different lenses in addition to following the steps already recommended and linked to here.

Read here.
All my canons had this problem. I found Nikon was the solution. |
