Hi all, I just purchased a new Canon 40D and I'm very happy with the camera overall.

The only problem I have is the camera displays an 'Error 99' randomly while taking photos. Sometimes it will happen back-to-back and other times it happens 50 photos appart.

I've done some basic googling and it looks like I'll have to take it back. Has anyone had this error?

From what I always read in the Forums, these question usually asked.
Does it happen with all your lenses or just one?
If one it could be the contacts on the lens are dirty and not getting good signals and giving error99 to the camera.
If all lenses, it could be the camera's contacts. Not sure how to clean them but could be a quick google search.
Best of Luck, Canon experts will ask better questions.
I could be wrong too, just what I hear. :)

There is an easier solution: Swap it out for a Nikon D90.

Just kidding:-)

You may have already searched the web, but here are some other threads discussing this issue.

Try a different memory card. I had something similar a while ago after buying a memory card (which turned out to be fake) from ebay. It worked until I had the card about a third full then I just kept getting errors. Swapped the card and it can fill that without issues.

Thanks guys, I have a few lens and the problem is accross them all. Camera's contacts are good as its brand new. Can't check out the CR card as I only have one but it's a genuine one from a photography specialist store so should be the real thing. I have a mate with a 40D so I'll get him to bring his CR in to work and give it a try.

Thanks again, looks like it might be going back to Canon although I don't know how I'll survive!

I had the dreaded Error 99 a few months ago. Popped out the battery, stuck it back in... and have not seen the error since. Considering that yours is a brand new camera, I'd suspect that there may be bigger issue. :o\

I use the 'pop the battery in and out' trick to reset the camera each time the error shows. Can be a bit annoying however in the dark during long bracketed exposures.

I would return it for a new one.

I had this on a 350d, on and off for just over a year. Eventully it failed completely and had to have the main board replaced. Credit to canon they fixed it even though the warrenty was out by a month. Error 99 can mean anything and shouldn`t happen on a new camera and will not fix itself.

I`ve now switched to nikon and never had a single error on 6 nikon dslr`s.

Good decision!

No matter what anyone says, it is YOU who has to live with knowing your smackin new camera can stop breathing any minute. You paid full price for it, you deserve the best they can offer.

I tried living with a similar issue (well it started small with a few always ON hot pixels) where the LCD was badly scratched but hidden with the plastic cover. I hated to send it back, but I am content now that I have a replacement body that didnt come out chipped right out of the box.

Good luck.

ETA: I always thought the camera is a 'he' and not 'she';-)

I had this error happen to me during an air show. Turns out it was the camera shutter mechanism. Sent it back to Canon and since it was under warranty they replaced it free of charge...Phew!

Spoke with the store of purchase today and they are more than happy to replace the body.

I pickup my new, 'new' 40D tomorrow! ;)
