I'm sure yours will improve. Mine seems to be moving in the right direction. There are a few amazing shots in this challenge.

This challenge will be all over the place with resultant low scores because very few pictures will satisfy every subgroup's interpretation of what the challenge is about. Just my prediction.

You nailed it then, Doc.

Could be... We should however keep in mind when judging the way others might act that not all DPC'ers have English as their mother tongue and may or may not take the challenge or its description more or less literarily. One of the toughest things when learning a foreign language is interpretation and double meanings of words, phrases and fables.

A simple example but to illustrate: Take the challenge "blue". If a voter from the far east does not know that this also represents a mood, he may vote such an entry as DNMC. Was he right or wrong in doing this? If all of us learn to accept that not everyone are from the same country or culture, we might be less frustrated and more understanding WHEN we receive both 7's and 3's in the same challenge.

This is not negative critique by any means to the posters above - only my own 2 "øre" (a Norwegian currency similar to cents but also means "ear" - didn't you know?). :)

Well, as long as it stays over five so I can erase all memory of my average 4. entries. English is a foreign language to me, but I googled and looked up puzzle in my dictionary before start shooting.

I thought for sure mine would be a 6+. It actually is a type of puzzle. Lighting is good. It's nice and sharp. Good colors. But the score baffles me. My only guess is that the voters don't get it.

"... or is puzzling in nature." I like the attempt to broaden the definition, but I suspect many voters don't get that far. On the other hand, it's easier on the ego to think "people don't understand my photo" than "my photo isn't very good."

It's easy to assume that because something scores badly that 'they just don't get it'. I'd be surpsised if everybody were similarly confused.

Well again, based on the generally low scores, the swing from one score to the next, and the discussion beforehand, it appears this challenge DID confuse the voters.

No, it confused some of the entrants. As a voter I'm not confused. As an entrant I took a picture of a puzzle. Again, I'm not confused.

Well, correctly change SOME to MANY and yes, you got it right.

Mine is a puzzle. An obscure kind of puzzle, but still a puzzle. So I got the challenge. That part didn't confuse me.

I don't think many got it wrong, but I guess it depends on the width of ones interpretation. Some were spectacularly off-topic (IMVHO), but certainly not most.

Could possibly be that your entry (i.e. not the challenge) confused many of the entrants? My score seems to be fairly steady and mine is not a picture of a jigsaw puzzle.

Seems very low.

But from 44 voters (more than 31 is statistically significant by the way) either:

your photo is on-topic but poor

or

your photo is on-topic and good but the majority of voters don't understand the challenge

or

your photo is significantly off-topic (whether it's poor or not).

It's a shame you don't have more comments for guidance.

If looking at a clear puzzle (noun) confuses people, then I'm guilty.

it would be nice if there was some way to know if the voters are dnmcing or if the shot isn't that good ... personally I thought it would be at least at the other end of the 5's :(

Why do you assume people are confused? Give your voters some credit, maybe they just don't like it.

I've always tried to remember the following: 'don't blame the audience if they don't get your jokes'.
02/25/2009 12:00:44 PM · #50
It's easy to blame the challenge topic, but as I've gone through the entries (and I haven't finished yet) I have to admit that I'm just not very inspired by the majority of them. I believe myself to be rather open minded when it comes to interpretations of the challenge topic. To me, what makes this a low-scoring challenge so far is the lack of visual appeal and creativity of many of the entries. I don't want to sound all holier-than-thou because I didn't enter this challenge nor did I have any creative ideas I wanted to shoot for it, but I think people sometimes get so hung up on shooting for the topic that the overall impact of the image is lacking.

eta: as I work my way through, there are definitely some gems, and I don't mean to gloss over that, my point only being that the challenge topic may not be the only reason people are unhappy with their votes.
