Howdy folks,
In addition to spending time at the PC for photo editing and regular internet browsing, I also work as a software programmer. Since a lot of folks here also spend a big amount of time working at the PC, I was wondering if any of you may suggest a good computer/desk chair. Something a notch above the Office Depot / Staples offerings.
The Herman Miller Aeron gets a lot of buzz. A friend has one and isn't too happy with it. They also have a Mirra model (which seems to have better reviews), and SteelCase has the leap models. My budget is around ~$500ish. I'd rather get myself a new speedlight but wrong ergonomics have taken a toll on my work productivity. I like the Herman Miller chairs because they have this breathable design, and not looking for the Knee Chairs out there.
Thanks for any help :)
p.s.
I can drive down to NYC. With Sharper Image closing its doors.. someone know of good place to checkout a variety of chairs at one place. |

There is no more ergonomically perfect situation than Reclined Computing. I use & recommend a LazyBoy. [eta] Zero Gravity Recliner. looks good, too. The most fatiguing part of using a computer is eye strain, so when setting up a reclined workstation I concentrate on that. This is a good article on computer-use eyestrain. Good luck!

Ever tried out a kneeling chair?
It feels really bizarre at first, we're just not used to sitting like that. However, I got used to it very quickly and found it was great for my back!
Those chairs force you to sit up properly with really good posture, but you don't even realize you're doing it. It just so happens that if you were to slouch badly, you'd fall off it ! Pretty good incentive, huh? :-)
If you can manage to find one locally to try it out, give it a go. It's quite something!
ETA: I should add that your legs/knees can get tired, so I wouldn't want to sit in it the whole day, but alternate between that and a normal chair. Or turn around to sit in it the wrong way for a while, as some people do.

Get the Aeron. You will not regret it. We have them at work and they are by far the best and most comfortable you will find. Worth every penny. |

I've tried a LazyBoy a few years back for at least a few months. Just felt it swallowed me in more than offered any support. Then tried the Homedics Antigravity which I'm using now. The frame of the unit protrudes through the thin foam padding after many months use. Adding extra padding doesn't help much as it doesn't contour as well. Tired of playing around with that. So I decided I should go back to the more sitting up pose and get a solid working chair. |

As far as I'm concerned the Aeron Chair is absolutely fantastic. We had them at work, back when I worked at a software company, and I'd give my left little toe to have one now...

What got me into the LazyBoy is this--when sitting in a 'regular' office chair, like I'm doing now, I have a habit of tucking my feet under the chair & crossing my ankles. Then, when I stand up I can't walk 'cos my ankle isn't working. I, too, had a job once that gave me an Aeron chair to sit in & they are comfortable but not for as long as a LazyBoy is comfortable--for me. I've also had the kneeling chair, which I like when painting water colors but not when sitting still for long periods of time.
Seriously, the Most Important Thing is your eyes. Make your eyes comfortable & everything else will follow. Get anti-glare tinted glasses, even if you don't need them to see clearly. And sit at least 24 in away from the monitor, looking at a slight downward angle. If you don't have an LCD, get one. Etc.
