Even dead bugs make poor photo subjects. Kind of like dudes.

So there were only two shots here that I could track down. One owner I contacted, the other I couldn't easily find contact info on, so gave PixelPerfect the url and they've already removed the shot and thanked me.
Might be only one drop at a time, but at least we're trying to empty the bucket a bit! |

Well, for protecting photos from stealing I've developed a tool that allows you sign you photo by an invisible sign. When the photo is once signed the prove of the property is easy ... check www.adptools.com if interested. The tool name SignMyImage and its shareware/partly freeware :-) Have a nice day. |

Nothing like reviving an old thread, but in this case, it's worth it :)
This image posted by our friend Faye on webshots taken from here.
I already alerted the photographer by email.

Good luck with that last stuff. In another album someone wrote:
just curious on how many of these are stolen? I reconize a few from other sites
But it was written 4 months ago....

Rebecca, I'll bet when you started this thread in 2007 you didn't think it would still be going in 2009. :-)
Btw, it looks like the most recent "bump" came from a spammer (filipkrolupper)-- not to say it's not a legit product. |

Filip Krolupper is a software developer - he is the author of the software in question. Whilst he may be "signposting" his software, I'd hardly call it spam which is indiscriminate. At least he had the decency to post his advert in a relevant thread lol.
As for the software itself, I have evaluated it, and it is easy to use both in single file mode, or in batch mode. You can sign the image with a secret string that only you would know (although the string doesn't allow spaces which is a shame). Your digital signature is hidden within the jpeg data so is invisible. The unregistered version also places a visible signature in addition to the invisible one.
The invisible signature was inserted into a vertical band throughout the centre of the photo. This stretched from edge to edge. I didn't get to choose where this was (it would be handy for example if I could position my hidden signature over the main subject or focal point of the image. So I then cropped the image very slightly so as to infringe on this zone. The software was then unable to detect the sign. So it was easily foiled by cropping a few millimeters from each side of the image. This could be averted if the software allowed you to position the signature in a more central location, or if the signature band did not extend to the very edge of the image.
I then tried to merely open the signed file and resave it in photoshop so that the JPG data was resampled. The software was still able to find the signature on this occasion, so I then did a more extreme resampling and saved for web. Again the software was able to detect the signature.
All in all, it works reasonably well. You could sign your final version of the image, and then upload the image to websites to your heart's content, safe in the knowledge that should a dispute over image ownership occur you could use the software to show your hidden signature. The software is easily foiled however by croping the image - although having a larger cropped version would surely help any dispute over ownership with someone that was showing a smaller cropped image.
But then having the raw file is probably as good a way as to prove ownership of the original image?
Whilst I might use the software in it's current form, I would definitely use it if the position of the signature could be user defined to avoid the cropping issue. I have fed this back to the author, so who knows what might come from a future revision.

Having experimented a bit further, it seems that the zone for signature insertion is in a random position based on dimensions of the inital image. This means that most of the time cropping would not break the signature. Perhaps I was unlucky that the first batch I did had the signature extend to the edge of the image.

Unfortunately, this won't stop people from stealing your image; it just helps you prove it's yours after it happens. And as you said, possession of a RAW file would do that job as well.

I haven't actually tried the associated web crawler which supposedly then goes away and trawls the web looking for images with your signature in. This feature was available to registered users only. But seeing as registration is free I might give it a try... the difficulty of course is that you have to sign the pictures and post them, then wait for them to be stolen before they can be detected. Of course, this can be replicated by uploading your own photo to a number of sites then seeing if the crawler can find them.
I might give that a go at the weekend when I have more time to spare. |

You are polite, and very sweet. I will try to come back around more often and get caught up on how everyone has been doing. BTW, did you have a recent health scare? I thought I saw a thread about this, but could not find it when I came back to catch up. Could you possibly pm the link? |
