That's a great focal length for a prime lens. I have an old Nikkor "O" manual Ai lens, and it is one of the best in my bag. I used it extensively last summer after my 18-70 G went over the waterfall at Glacier N P in Montana. I hope that the new 35 G's will keep that glass quality like the old Ai's had.

Here is the official Nikon page.
I wonder though. Why would it replace the 50mm 1.8 nifty-fifty (besides the focal length)?

| crop factop... 50 on a DX is a 75 (No longer normal).... 35 on a DX is a 52.5 (as close to normal as you're gonna get) |

Quoted from Nikon's Page
"Optical formula optimized for use with Nikon DX-format digital SLRs, rendering a picture angle approximating the classic normal angle of view of a 50mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera" |

Makes complete sense if you look at it from an economic pov. I don't know the sales stats but I'd bet that for Nikon, Canon, and Sony (the manufacturers that produce both 35mm FF and APS-C cameras) the sales of APS-C far out weighs FF and by a very large margin. Most people can't afford the $3000-$8000 price tag for a FF camera or the new, equally high priced FX lenses. I guess you could argue that DX lenses won't work on FF cams and so will be a lost investment when upgrading to FF. However, the price of this new AF-S lens is miniscule and don't the new FX cameras take DX lenses with an adapter and in-camera crop?
I'd venture to say too that most people don't need FF as their printing needs rarely if ever exceed 8x10, and even up to 16x20 APS cameras are more than adequate. Also, most (the masses) probably don't want to carry around huge FF bodies and FF lenses. APS also gives longer focal range for wildlife or sports shooters. The strata of offered models range from the small bodied to the large; entry level to professional; sub $1000 to $8000. Should Nikon discontinue their entry level or semi-pro models and give over those market segments to their competitors? Wouldn't make economic sense.
Sounds to me that with this announcement Nikon is making a statement that they will continue to produce and support the small sensored cameras, as most likely will Canon too.

Nice one for those with entry level bodies. Finally an affordable AF prime that you guys can use.

A true normal is 43mm being the diagonal length of 135 format frame. The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is closer to a true normal on Nikon APS-C.

Actually I'd say zooms make no sense and any prime is better than no primes.

Please!
Considering the percentage of Nikons out there that are DX format, it makes no sense NOT to have DX primes.

Wonder if it is plastic mount. I hope not. But considering the price I suspect that it is. Still it could turn out to be a great lens. Particularly for the D40/D60 street photog crowd. I |

The way I read the interview: the new dx 35mm 1.8 to the fx 35mm 2 on DX cameras-- the sweet spot is superior on the new lens--so the new lens is superior to the older one for a d90, for example. Purchasing the 35mm f2 would not make sense for a dx camera, then.
But man, did some FF snobs surface here, or what? :-) |
