Funny thing I have to make $15 hour to pay more than unemployment insurance, maybe it̢۪s time to learn how to make that expensive camera and lenses pay for themselves one way or the other..

Anyone else notice what our own Bruce_the_Robert has done?

Trusted Review:
Our first prize winner this month is this fantastic shot from Robert Heverly of Norwich. Says Robert "It was taken with my Nikon D50 and a Nikon 18-55 lens in December 2007. I love how the light falls, and also how if you look, you can tell it's winter, but there isn't snow all over the place, just bare trees, frost, and a shivery feeling. One of my favorite photos in a long time. The river is the Danube near Dillingen, Germany." Robert wins a 2GB PNY SD card for his D50, and a £50 Photobox voucher.

This is a common DPC illness. It goes around. It's very contagious. It is something, however, from which you will recover. I go through phases where I HATE, DETEST, CAN NOT STAND entering challenges. It shows. Then I go through phases where I enter challenges with delight and joy, and just let it ride. Not sure if that shows, at least in the scores, but I sure do enjoy it a whole lot more!

Take some time off. Play in a side challenge - that'll keep you plenty busy. Post an image or two you like here for your fellow TS'ers to enjoy. Don't let it get to you. :-)

I am trying some new, more artsy techniques. Here are two of my first attempts. Comments?

...

I hope everyone is having a super 2009 ... I was quite ill since Xmas with an incredibly tenacious flu that developed into a serious bacterial ear, nose, throat and lung infection. I am pretty much back to normal now (if you can EVER call ME "normal") and hope to be around a lot more.

Greetmir - good to see you back! Sorry to hear about being under the weather. I really like the two new shots you posted - very lovely!

Jelena, I shall try harder.... I'm still floating just above a 5, but have hopes it will go back down. :-)

Do we have any Team Suck people out near San Francisco? I'll be in the Bay Area the week after Valentine's Day.

Greetmir! I need your help as I am now dating a Belgian! (and no I don't mean a Belgian horse, lol, all you naughty people out there ;-) Quick, fill me in on what Belgians are known for besides Herge, Tintin, Asterix and eating horsemeat, great fries and lots of mussels ;-)

Oh yeah will try to post some transcedental pix too...

Deb, huge thanks for your comment on my tree, you're the only one who noticed the light. Much appreciated.

Here is another that I was playing with ... ... For those that were asking about my processing technique, for all three shots I was playing with Shadow Highlight, Curves, Selective Colour and Vibrancy with a couple of light applications of USM and Lucis Arts filter in the process. I can't really be more specific than that as I had many layers going and was constantly tweaking until I got the result I wanted. Thanks to everyone that left comments. They were much appreciated.

Regarding Belgium ... hrm

... over 340 types of locally brewed beer to choose from ... many as cheap as water ... including several witbeers (a light beer with a slighly milky look that incorporates lemon rind in the creation ... super summer refresher) and several krieks (another light beer with sour cherry juice added in the creation process) and tons and tons of others including many abbey made beers and some beers in the 12% and even a couple in the 18% alcohol by volume range!

... tons of European wines available with no import tax added so, for example, you can buy a drinkable French or German white dinner wine for as low as under 2 Euros.

... many Belgians slaughter their fries with mayonnaise and CRINGE at those that ask for vinegar for them! ... eat meatballs with cherries ... erm lots of mixing of savory and sweet flavours. They love their stoofvlees [pronounced stofe-vlayss (rich beef stew made with dark beer and without vegetables simmered until it will melt in your mouth) Belgians often eat what we would consider dessert for an appetizer before dinner rather than something savory.

Never ever ever EVER call fries French Fries in front of a Belgian.

One must not forget to mention the world famous Belgian Chocolate and praleens and melt- in-your-mouth Belgian cheeses.

... contrary to the cheap booze, mussels are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive here, especially to eat out, with most restaurants charging 22 to 26 Euros for a feed of em. Too insane for a boy like me that has lived in PEI for 6 years and bought them and lobsters (which are also hellish expensive here) right off the boats.

One of the great things about Belgium IMO is that they do not dub American or British (or any other foreign language) TV series or movies on the Belgian TV Channels but just add subtitles ... so you don`t get Stephen Segal sounding like Mickey Mouse as you do on the Netherlands, French and German TV channels. I like movies in their original language and sound track, not dubbed, just subtitled. I think the English dubbed version of Das Boot, for example was LAME compared to the original German version with English subtitles.

You never mentioned if he is Flemish Belgium (north half) or French Belgium (south half) I am Central North. (btw Flemish is to Dutch kind of what French Canadian is to French only not as different)

Those are the main points that I can think of off the top of my head. I hope this helps you understand Belgians a little better, Snaffles.

Oh, and Belgium isn't all that far from Holland, and Greetmir, I think you really want to go to Amsterdam and maybe Keukenhof the first weekend of April, don't you? :-)

I'm planning to go and trying to find some DPC'ers who might like to be there then, too!

How did I know that this message would tweak you on this get-together LOL. I will have to convince my wifie.

YAY!!! Tell her I'll buy her a cappucino, or the beverage of her choice.

We will see ... but ... wifie says prolly. :)

We can help with accomodation investigations but DO NOT consider staying in a boat cabin room as we did once to save very few euros. They are bunkbeds and a dresser with about 1 meter by 1/2 meter of standing room. NOT worth the savings for such sardine quarters.

There are many reasonable clean and nice places to stay especially in the off season and especially if you book in advance. We would prolly be looking at from 50 to 75 Euros for a double/twin if we book in advance at that time of year depending on how posh you wanted it. Of course their is no ceiling on 5 star accomodations ... We, ourselves, won't be looking at that.

P.S. ... regarding shopping btw ... they have a large fleamarket going on every Saturday morning.

Keep in touch with us re: what you would like to see/do. My wife wants to check out the Hard Rock Cafe there if we go. Lots of time to do research re: places of interest and accomodation. Even if we end up not going (we will try though) we can help with planning and such. I think you will find Amsterdam an EXCELLENT place for street photography too. Take lots of MEMORY!

We are looking at a ONE NIGHT stayover only and prolly it would have to be a Fri-Sat or Sat-Sun for us.

When we get close to the nitty gritty details, I think we should break off into email communications at to exactly where we/you will be and when. (Greetmir@yahoo.com)

I'm not in need of 5 star accomodations. My requirements are much simpler - clean, safe, and close to public transportation. 50-75 Euro is reasonable to me. And I think you should do Sat-Sun, depending on how long it takes you to get there, so we can do the flea market on Saturday (although I am not a big shopper, but I like shooting pictures at flea markets!). I will bring lots of memory! I haven't been to a Hard Rock Cafe in a LONG time, so that sounds like a good idea for lunch.

Thanks Greetmir! I think he's French Belgian...believe he's from around Bruges originally. He mentioned learning Flemish in school when he was still in Belgium, been here since he was 11, so he's pretty much Canadian. Has that whole European thing of buying fresh food daily and cooking for supper as opposed to buying ready-to-eat stuff. He's possibly the only person I've met capable of being more intense than me, esp when heading out on a training session!

Argh and lucky you, getting to go and shoot with Deb - at a flea market no less! Have fun!
