is there a way to see the image size of an area you have selected? |

I don't know of any way to make it display the size of the selection in the taskbar, if that's what you mean; I've never noticed that. But if you have PS set to display rulers, and if the ruler units are set to the unit you want to measure your size in, then it's easy to just drag the zero point down to the upper-left corner of your selection and then draw guides for the right and bottom edges and read the size off where they intersect the rulers. You can even just hover the cursor at the lower right corner of the selection and see where it "shows" on the two rulers if you just want a ballpark figure...
Maybe someone else will point out something that makes us both feel dumb, some place where PS keeps a running tally of x/y axis placements, but I haven't seen it.

Using the crop tool, make a selection, and watch the "INFO" panel (next to the Histogram tab). This will give you the measurement (in inches) on the X & Y axis. Also on the crop tool, you can specify the size, and then drag the preview box around.
Not sure if that was what you were looking for...

Oh, awesome! Works with the selection tool also! Never knew that. The units read out in whatever units are selected for the rulers: I have my rulers set to "pixels" in preferences, so the read out is in pixels for me, which is how I'd want it to be. It's hard for me to work in "inches" in PS since that scale changes in absolute terms depending on the resolution you've assigned to the image.
Thanks for pointing me at this!
