Hi All,
I'm in the market for a new laptop, and am astounded by the number of seemingly great systems for low $ on the market.

Here's what I'm looking for (from a usage perspective):
Photo editing (primary use. I do have a nice home system for this, but find that i like to be mobile)
Tethered shooting
General web usage (for travel)

Looking around, it seems like there are a ton of units in the $1000 range (give or take) that would fit the bill. I'm looking for advice on build-quality, low-problem, fast machines. Yes... I considered Mac, but just can't see spending twice the $.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Rob

I spent three months here reading and learning: Notebook forum
I was in the market for a desktop replacement so a bit different then you.

Take a look at the Lenovo's/HP and Dell's I think you'll be impressed and they make several that will fit your needs. Read the forums in the above link and they will answer all your questions. Friendly group. Also you can get reviews from many that own the machine your looking at.
Some killer deals out there $$!! Have fun.

p.s. If you can go to a store, SONY, BestBuy, Costco, etc. and try them out in person it's really helpful.

What programs do you plan to use for photo editing on it?

CS4 & LR2. I'd like to go 64bit as well (not a hard requirement though).

I'd take a look at some of the ASUS laptops like the M50 or the M70. They're marketed as "gaming" laptops, but they would also handle photo editing very well and they're moderately priced.

I̢۪ve been using a Toshiba Satellite with a 17 inch screen for about three years now with no problems at all. I use it for traveling or when I just don't want to sit at my desktop. Not real heavy usage but enough to know I would not hesitate to buy another one.

I use a Lenovo T61P Thinkpad, and love it. My girlfriend has a T61 Thinkpad as well, and loves hers.
Durability is great. Mine just recently took a three foot drop to the ground after some IDIOT decided to tangle his feet in the cord. Zero damages. Had it for about 1.5 years. I can't say enough about how comfortable it is to type on either.
Be forewarned with Lenovo though... you may have some ordering hurdles. Once the machines had arrived, they were awesome, it was just the arriving part...
there are a few other laptop threads floating around too....

ETA: Definitely check out CNET for in depth reviews too. Keep in mind though, that some of the things the uber tech nerds get hung up about, don't even necessarily concern you and your real world use of the products.

If you're going to use it for photo editing, make sure you can calibrate the display with a device such as Pantone Huey or other. Laptop displays are notorious for showing poorly calibrated color and brightness. Editing, if you can't calibrate the display, will break your heart.

I have no direct experience, yet, but I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 with the T9400 processor and 6Gb of ram on order. Looks like a good one. I've used Dell Lattitude laptops at work for several years and have purchased several Dell computers for family members at home. This will be my first Dell laptop for photography purposes... hoping it's a good one. :)
